Soul Ties is a community based art- and story-making endeavor that will take form as a series of “making days” with pop-up stations at several host locations throughout New Orleans. Facilitated by our team of designers, tailors, photographers, artist educators, and story-gathering community collaborators, the project will engage a diverse cross-section of New Orleanians to create Soul Ties – bow t
ies fashioned from, celebrating, and carrying on the personal (hi)stories of our city. With the creation of each Soul Tie a community story will be told, given form, and documented in a collection of photographs and text to be showcased online. Soul Ties will invite participants to bring to the project special and sentimental items – material, small objects, photographs, texts – relics that hold stories and memories of the people, places, and occurrences that make up our personal histories, our relationships, and our communities. From these near and dear materials – the lining from granddad’s favorite suit, an old school uniform, a letter from an old friend, the lines of a favorite poem, a lucky button… – Soul Ties will be made.
