Our album of the month is Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert. Recorded on November 5, 2022, this live album is by folk singer-songwriter “Chan” Marshall, known as Cat Power. This record reimagines Bob Dylan’s set at the Manchester Free Trade Hall on May 17, 1966. Parallel to Dylan’s set, the first half is slow, heartfelt, and acoustic, and the second half is a high energy performance with a full band. Powers’ voice is hauntingly vulnerable, and her idea to reimagine this iconic performance from top to bottom was a brave undertaking, in which she executed beautifully and created something distinctly her own.

Our film of the month is The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

The film follows a wealthy man named Henry Sugar, who discovers a medical report of a yogi who can see without using his eyes. Henry decides to dedicate his life to training his mind through a practice of meditation, and eventually masters the skill himself. He decides to use his new skill at a casino, but after winning big, feels empty inside. He’s faced with the question: How does a wealthy man with unlimited access to money find fulfillment?

Henry’s desire to attain superhuman sight mirrors his eventual shift in perspective from personal gain to altruism, which is ultimately a commentary on the true purpose of meditation, which isn’t to serve the self, but the world.

Wes Anderson’s signature coloring and theatrics illuminate the story, while the film remains true to Ronald Dahls storytelling. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
