Tainan Art Museum | The Untold Stories of Conserving WONG Kun-De’s Art and Huang, Po-Hsun Solo Exhibition

I've always been intrigued by the restoration of artworks, so when I learned that the Tainan Art Museum had an exhibition related to this theme, I was eager to visit. To my surprise, I discovered that the artist behind this exhibition was someone very modest and was also from my husband’s hometown of Chiayi. He received an education in Japan and has made significant contributions to Taiwanese culture and art, yet he has remained humble and hasn't held solo exhibitions. In this exhibition at the Tainan Art Museum, it’s featuring works by WONG Kun-De that had been restored for the public to appreciate. His art is simple and close to life, making it very enjoyable to view. I want to express my gratitude to the Tainan Art Museum and the collaboration of restoration experts from various fields who used scientific testing and advanced restoration techniques to allow us, the future generations, to continue enjoying these beautiful artworks.
Another exhibition that left a deep impression on me was "YESTERDAY SCENERY, THE TOMORROW FLARE" by Huang, Po-Hsun. These artworks are delightful and filled with vibrant colors, featuring imaginative and surreal scenes that bring joy to those who view them.

Tainan Art Museum | Crescendo: Three Generations of Tshun-Guân Art Studio

During my visit to Tainan, I not only explored the Chimei Museum but also wanted to see what the Tainan Art Museum had to offer. The museum itself is a historical site, and the diversity of artworks within truly impressed me. There were three exhibitions in particular that left a lasting impression on me, all of which primarily showcased the works of local Tainan artists. One of them was the "Tshun-Guân Art Studio."
Initially, I thought about skipping this exhibition, but the guided tour opened my eyes to the beauty of folk art painting. The Tshun-Guân Art Studio is a family-run studio with a history spanning a hundred years, and their artistic influence can be found in temples of all sizes throughout Taiwan. The exhibition began with their renowned door god paintings. Despite the changing times and the impact of wars, they have continued to create art for this land, quietly contributing to Taiwan's cultural heritage. I have immense admiration for their dedication. The guide told us that the master of the studio always humbly regarded his family as not an artistic one but just a family that knew how to make a living. This humility was truly remarkable.
Over three generations, the masters of the studio took on various jobs to make ends meet, including creating mural paintings for wealthy families, designing novel covers, and crafting landscape paintings, among others. In the final exhibition space, the curator creatively displayed sculptures made by both Pan Chun Yuan and Pan Li Shui. These sculptures faced the character "孝" (filial piety), echoing the studio's commitment to carrying on their family legacy through their practice of filial piety.

Chimei Museum | Ouside of box! Riusuke Fukahori’s goldfish and Chien-Chung Liao’s gas truck

During my visit to the Chimei Museum, two other artists who left a deep impression on me were Riusuke Fukahori and Chien-Chung Liao. Without the guidance of the tour, I might have overlooked their works, thinking, "Isn't this just goldfish and trucks?" Little did I know the complicated details behind their creations.
Riusuke Fukahori's layered resin goldfish drawings were truly remarkable. He used transparent resin to create layered, three-dimensional goldfish, and at first glance, I thought they were actual preserved fish specimens embedded in resin. The artist built up these lifelike goldfish layer by layer from the bottom up, showcasing an impressive level of skill and artistry.
Chien-Chung Liao 's "Gas Truck" depicted the chaotic aftermath of a gas truck collision, and initially, I mistook this artwork for a real vehicle. However, the tour guide explained that these were proportionally accurate truck and gas cylinders crafted by the artist from various materials. The level of realism achieved in the depiction of the collision was truly captivating. The artist effectively captured the energy of that moment. I admire this Taiwanese artist for staying true to his unique artistic expressions. After reading some of his interviews, Chien-Chung Liao mentioned that he not only enjoys turning things he loves into art but also uses art as a means to release emotions and convey certain feelings.

As a museum enthusiast, I've always been curious about the Chimei Museum. The fact that the renowned business tycoon, Wen-Long Shi, is willing to invest so many resources to provide the people of Tainan with free access to art is truly remarkable. During my first visit to the Chimei Museum, I initially wanted to explore its collection of European and American artworks. However, to my surprise, there was a special exhibition available to view – "Outside of Box | When Machine Meets Art." This exhibition primarily featured artworks related to machinery and materials. It showcased contributions from six countries and nine artists: Wen-Long Shi (Taiwan), James Cook (UK), Chi-Shuan Ying (Taiwan), Sebastian Brajkovic (Netherlands), Seungmo Park (Korea), Minako Ishikawa (Japan), Riusuke Fukahori (Japan), Chien-Chung Liao (Taiwan), Christoph Niemann (Germany). I highly admire the curator's discernment in selecting such fitting artists to convey the meaning of this exhibition.
I must first mention the exquisite collection of Chimei’s typewriters. The exhibition displayed dozens of typewriters, each of them incredibly beautiful. In addition to the antique typewriters, one modern artist, James Cook, utilized typewriters as a medium for his creations, which I found absolutely stunning. He crafted detailed artworks using the densely packed letters, incorporating gradients, colors, depth, and aerial perspectives.

In recent years, I've been wanting to take a little trip to Tainan, but for various reasons,I have made it. Finally, this summer, I achieved that goal. While my daughter was at summer camp, I took a stroll in Tainan.
On the first day, in the scorching noon sun, I decided to visit Shen Nong Street. At first, I was a bit clueless about why it was called Shen Nong Street, but I later realized it was named after Shen Nong, the cChinese doctor known for tasting various herbs. How silly of me! Along the narrow streets, there were many charming creative shops, which suited my taste perfectly. In the small Five Channels Studio, I found some vintage and adorable postcards that reminded me of milk cans and camphor pills from my childhood. I also stumbled upon a humorously unique closed-mode stall, which sells items on a honest system. It did make me stay a while just to see what it offered. Perhaps this street has a mischievous spirit because there was even a vending machine for mobile phone accessories with a return option if you weren't satisfied, as well as free charging stations, which I found very considerate. Tainan locals are truly witty; the store owner even ask if your mom knows you're here littering carelessly.

This summer, I took two tours with .taiwan around Taipei's Dadaocheng district, and each visit left me in awe. Every trip to Dadaocheng revealed more about the history of this area, particularly how its residents came here to rebuild their homes after conflicts with another group in the nearby district of Monga (Wanhua).
Our tour guide explained that, back in the day, due to sediment buildup in the rivers around Monga, the economic center gradually shifted to Dadaocheng. With increasing prosperity came well-to-do business owners who spent their wealth on fine dining and entertainment. Consequently, the area saw the emergence of more and more delectable restaurants and social halls for gatherings.
Dadaocheng was home to many discreet and influential landowners. When leasing their properties, these landlords didn't just consider the rental income but also evaluated the tenant's character and how their business would contribute to the neighborhood. Thus, not all types of businesses were allowed to establish themselves here. These property owners were committed to preserving the heritage of Dadaocheng, and I find this spirit truly admirable.
During my younger years, I had never heard of Dadaocheng because the economic focus was primarily on Taipei's eastern district. Young people at the time favored shopping at department stores, watching movies, and going singing, so Dadaocheng was largely overlooked. However, over the past twenty years while I was living in the United States, it's heartwarming to see that younger generations have begun to discover and appreciate this culturally rich old district.
The increasing recognition of Dadaocheng's historical significance and unique architecture makes me proud of Taiwan. Listening to our guide's stories allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of my hometown, and I'm truly grateful to the team .taiwan for making this possible.

The Rose by Jay Defeo
Nice morning with friends at Whitney and saw this magnificent painting/sculpture
The name “Rose” makes me think of “Rose”, the flower but I believe it has nothing to do with flowers right? The museum label says at the end that getting the artwork out of the artist studio involved dismantling a window and a forklift. The length you would go to get a great art out for everyone to see!
