On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform slaves that they were free. The date became known as Juneteenth and is celebrated by Black Americans every year. In 2020, the fight against racial injustice sparked renewed interest in the holiday.
