We met Bellvine's founder, Heather Swatelle, during the pandemic when Zoom meetings were still a novel concept. At the time, Studio Jeannot was not even a glimmer in the distance. In those initial Zoom conversations, Heather's passion and enthusiasm for were infectious, inspiring us to develop and realize our own business vision. It has been inspiring to witness Heather's drive as her company continues to grow its reach in the ever-changing landscape of the interior design industry. Her mentorship and generosity have been invaluable to our entrepreneurial journey. So naturally, we are delighted to offer our pillows to trade professionals in the Bellvine digital showroom.

Sometimes people ask why we have a product line as a textile design studio. Designers, studios, and companies in the textile design industry usually specialize in either products or services, not both. A few do both, but overwhelmingly, many don't. When we first started our studio, we debated what our focus would be.

Our specialty is creating custom textile design solutions for high-end home furnishing brands. The work we create is confidential. It is generally a no-no to publicly share portfolios or projects unless you have been given express permission. Practicing discretion to protect our clients takes priority over extolling our creativity or offerings. Providing services allows us to wear many hats, work with awesome companies and people, and keep the studio running. The question is though, how do you convey what you do without showing it?

Creating products for our studio allows us to showcase our abilities freely. We want to ensure that our product side not only puts our capabilities and originality on display, but also gives our clients an intimate glimpse into our vision. Our products are finished goods and limited in quantity. Since we're a young company with modest resources, limited editions keep us agile and responsive to trends and our customers' needs.

Fell down a YouTube rabbit hole watching 's monoprint how-tos using oil sticks.

In traditional oil stick monoprints, the image is drawn or painted on a smooth surface, then pressed onto paper. Here, we used a plastic bag and a vellum stencil instead. Take a look at how we made our print step-by-step. Materials used are listed below. Check out even more printmaking how-tos on Dan's YouTube channel.

Next step is to digitize our print so it can be put into repeat - stay tuned!

Materials Used:
Mixed Media paper in Toned Tan - 9"x14"
Vidalon Vellum - 9" x 12
Oilbar - Black
A plastic bag (this can be wiped clean, dried, and reused)
X-acto knife or scissors

New works in progress. Loving the splotchy blots and fuzzy linework in this.

Familiar techniques for creating textiles are reused over and over because they work -- the path to a solution is clear and easy. Digging for something new and unexpected sometimes requires slow, spontaneous exploration. Running a studio can make carving out exploratory time challenging, especially if it's not for a specific client or product. We certainly fall off the exploration wagon quite a bit, but when we do reserve time for trying something new just because, the results are pleasantly surprising.

At the moment, we're into using acrylic inks to create monoprints like this one. What are some of your favorite mediums and techniques?

Dropped off the IG radar for the last month. We know, very naughty (or so we've been told). Studio projects, launch preparations, and client work have been keeping us busy. When that happens, updating social is one of the first things to drop off. The do lists goes on and on to infinity, but very happy to be booked and busy.

Aside from running Studio Jeannot, our founder Marteen teaches in the Textile/Surface Design department. One unexpected perk of teaching is access to unique design materials that would otherwise be discarded. The end of a semester usually means there are books, tools, color swatches, or like in this case, Trend Union forecasts up for the taking. One person's trash is another person's treasure, as the saying goes!

Latest acquisition for our design library.

This find was too good to resist. A Piece of Fire is a collection of Haitian folktales — think Brothers Grimm, but with a Caribbean flavor.

Our design library includes many classic textile and surface design reference books, but also includes picks like this one. Unconventional sources for inspiration add surprising layers of depth to any design. Also, any chance to find inspiration offline, is always a welcomed retreat!

We named our studio after our founder’s grandmother, Jeanne or as her family called her, Jeannot.

Born in 1919 in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Jeannot left Haiti for New York at 38 years of age. This trip to the U.S. was the last of many failed attempts. Rooted in her persistence was a desire to build a brighter future for our family. She worked as a nanny and an office cleaner, and became an unofficial shepherd to other Haitians arriving in New York.

The tale of migration and settlement isn’t new. For every family, the reasons for the journey are unique. The inevitable trials faced are very personal. This is especially true in light of recent world events.

We named our studio after Jeannot to give thanks and pay homage to her tenacity and sacrifice. We get to design textiles for a living, and we recognize our fortune.
