ESS.TLS Creative Director first met the incredibly talented make up artist & face painter Chiao Li Hsu in Brooklyn when she first moved to NYC from the Netherlands. Renowned agency had linked the two together thinking there could be a connection between their work. Sadly due to the pandemic and Chiao Li Hsu moving to London they never got a chance to collaborate. However we’re massive fans of Chiao Li Hsu artful and totally original work to this very day.

With exquisite hand painting and drawing skills and unbridled imagination, Chiao Li Hsu truly puts the ‘artist’ in make up artist. Sure she can do a smokey eye or dewy skin and a red lip (as often is the brief on a shoot) but very few make up artists possess the same calibre of skill and creativity that Chiao Li Hsu is gifted with. Drawing from a vast pool of inspiration from surrealism to playing with trompe l'oeil effects to simply adding delicate fine ethereal touches, her makeup are literally works of art. They’re astonishingly beautiful and we hope you find her work as inspiring as we do.

ESS.TLS Creative Director Paul Buii first met the incredibly talented make up artist & face painter Chiao Li Hsu in Brooklyn when she first moved to NYC from the Netherlands. ESS.TLS is completely enamored by the artwork of Hawaiian born, NY based artist Alison Moritsugu.

Often using salvaged logs from fallen trees as her medium, Moritsugu examines the contrivances found in landscape paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries. Inspired by the works of artists such as Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Edwin Church, that were deeply rooted in the political constructs, and depicted the land as a bountiful Eden.

By taking these images out of their familiar context, the framed canvas, and painting directly on wood slices with bark intact, Moritsugu reveals how idealized images of the land shape our concept of the natural world .
tls is very much inspired by her work. Also a quick side note, I know you’re waiting for the collection to drop and trust us, we can’t wait to start shooting samples, but due to the pandemic and in particular the Delta variant, there have been some delays with production with our factories. But we assure you, we are working as quickly - and safely - as possible to bring ESS.TLS to you. Canadian born artist Ellen Jewett’s ethereal sculptures are so out-of-this-world and often suspended in what often seems impossible, that they sometimes appear to look like paintings. But believe us, they are very much 3D formations, intricately hand sculpted in painstaking detail. At ESS.TLS]] we’re not just inspired by fashion, but also by art, nature and the creative genius of others.. While we’re essentially a basics line, we can certainly appreciates works that aren’t. And Ellen Jewett’s sculptures definitely falls into that category 💎💫💎

By focusing on negative spaces within the animals' bodies, Jewett strips away the weight of her objects, a quality that is usually inextricably linked to the medium of sculpture. She constructs her ceramic pieces using an additive technique, beginning with the innermost parts of the sculptures and layering outward.

Jewett also uses non-toxic materials to create these incredible pieces (which we applaud). She says her inspiration for these beautiful sculptures comes “from animal physiology and a love of the fantastic, grotesque and absurd” We’re so in love.🥰💎🥰

An interesting article from Gotham showing how up many luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton Gucci & Stella McCartney have started to develop genderless lines. ESS.TLS think this is the right direction and glad to see the bigger giants in fashion making these moves. Let's just hope they don't think it's a fleeting trend because - as we've always said - the way a piece of fabric of should to determine what gender you. 💎

We wanted to share the stunning work of New Zealand raised, New York based photographer - and often a collaborator of .tls own Creative Director - Sam Nixon

A skilled and astute fashion & portrait photographer, who also directs incredible films - Sam’s work is truly original, marrying the nostalgic grainy aesthetic of film (his often chosen medium for photography) - with a modern twist capturing off-kilter, powerful, beautiful and often-times uncomfortable moments.

He’s shot for and but it is evidently in his personal works that Sam’s vision shines through. Take for instance his brilliant short film and photography series ‘’Akhada’ where he traveled to the countryside of India, and documented the children of farmers wrestling in the mud with dreams of training in the traditional ‘Akhada’ wrestling schools.

By joining the ‘Akhada’, they enter a brotherhood - one that transcends cultural and religious differences and draws energy from the conditioning of their bodies and minds. Akhada - the short film - was an official selection of Raindance Film Festival 2020 and is now streaming live on Discover.film.
