You all know I named my business Brunette from Wall Street because I am a finance girl. But you don’t know I have some fashion background too. Well, not exactly the classic one. I didn’t go to Parsons nor Saint Martin’s. Although I did a few courses at London College of Fashion as I wanted to become a fashion designer a long time ago. Yes, a long time ago. Not quite my dream anymore as I prefer to be on the other side of the design chain. Besides, I have other priorities now. And yes, including shopping and wearing clothes. Girl needs some fun, right?

Anyway, I didn’t study fashion at university. Neither have I worked as a stylist. I know you must be asking why on earth I keep giving fashion advice then? Wait! I told you I have some fashion background. And what a fashion background that is. Expensive, for a start and très French!

Keep reading to find out how I turned into a Fashion Expert. Ps. Mother, please stop reading! I certainly don’t want you to get a heart attack while reading the second part of this post. Besides, believe me, you don’t want to know how much I spent on clothes and makeup during my study exchange in Paris.

There is a special reason why I decided to publish exactly this outfit with intel about my fashion background. Well, actually there are two reasons. Firstly this outfits represents Brunette from Wall Street, the fashion business lady that I am.

Ps. More about this outfit, including The EDIT is coming in the next issue of the Fashion Sign – Summer in the City. Meanwhile find more about this romper here.

Secondly, because I bought this bag and romper at LE BON MARCHé, RIVE GAUCHE for my first Haute Couture week. Well the story about this bag is even more emotional for me, so let’s leave it for another time.

Fashion trends aside, now back to this red romper. And how I become a girl in the know. Not to say fashion expert. Well yes, as said this red romper has a lot to do with that.

WHERE I LEARNT ALL, I KNOW ABOUT FASHION
Finally, the part you were waiting for the most this time. Or at least as much as where to shop this gorgeous red romper that I’m wearing here. Again, I got this romper at LE BON MARCHé, RIVE GAUCHE. At the same place, I learned all I know about fashion. Well almost all. I do have to do a lot of research when it comes to the latest fashion trends. And take notes at the fashion shows.

Anyway back to Le Bon Marché and the fashion lessons I took there. The thing is that I spent most of my free time and all that time when I was supposed to sit in the finance class during my study exchange in Paris at Le Bon Marché. You know that famous Parisian department store.

MY PARISIAN FASHION LESSONS
So what was I doing at Le Bon Marché? Certainly not working. What I did there was shopping like crazy. And earning my points. You know, on my La Carte 24 Sèvres loyalty card. So yes, that is why I spent 7k in one month. Well, don’t look like that. It’s not that I’m one of those people who feel earning points as a competition and they just want to reach that certain number to get the black loyalty card.

My final goal was never the number of points itself. Nor that black card. But the fashion lessons I could get. I mean who wouldn’t want to learn from a Parisian stylist?

Besides I spent my money on the finest makeup and clothes. Like this red romper.

Anyway, once I reached the Status Privilégié, I got my own private styling sessions from the best French stylists. And they taught me everything they know. Well, at least it felt like that. As they gave me so many tips, showed me bad and good examples, let me see how they style the outfits for the manikins and window displays.

Moreover, they helped me understand the Parisian way of dressing. The secrets of looking chic in a simple white shirt and jeans. Unfortunately, they still haven’t brought the French flair into my step. But I have a feeling they will soon convince me to wear flats more often.

HOW I STAY IN THE KNOW
Obviously, all the valuable knowledge I get (yes, still getting my fashion lessons every time I go to Paris) from the best stylists wouldn’t be enough for me to run fashion business as such. So I make sure to do in-depth research about all the latest fashion trends and take notes during the fashion shows.

Although, truth to be told only watching the shows and taking shots of my favourite designs wouldn’t be enough. If you have had a look at my Insta stories during the last fashion week, then you must have noticed how intense fashion shows are. There is so much going on, and models walk so fast one after another, so it’s complicated to keep up with everything, share all my favourite looks on the social media, plus remembering all the promising trends.

Anyway, to stay in the know, I help myself with the Pinterest. I know many of you know this board already, but linking it again here, in case you haven’t checked my Pinterest yet.

Furthermore, I read all the fashion insider researches and news. You know, fashion is not only what you see in the glossy magazines, editorials and Instagram. The fashion business is a real deal, worth billions of dollars. And to be a legit fashionista, who can give advice on fashion and style you need to know more than just the latest fashion trends.

And to be a legit fashionista, who can give advice on fashion and style you need to know not only the latest fashion trends, but also the business behind, the story that makes clothes stand out, and of course, the mode de Vivre of the brand Parisians understand so well.

You wouldn’t take fashion advice from me if I were only a finance girl or just a girl with a passion for fashion (like everyone likes to say), would you?

“I don’t think you need to drop a ton of money to feel stylish or put-together and that’s always been my mindset.” I couldn’t agree more with Brittany, the woman behind the popular blog and Instagram, Thrifts and Threads. She has a great mix of classic and on trend pieces and loves to mix and match thrift store finds with retail purchases.

thrifts and threads patriotic outfit
Love the off the shoulder detail!

Brittany totally inspired me with her Fourth of July inspired outfit. I think it’s the perfect mix of style with patriotism. I know some of you will disagree with me, dear readers, but I am not a fan of head to toe red, white, and blue for Independence Day. I know, I know, it’s only once a year and it’s a time to show appreciation for our great country, but I just can’t get on board. Most people just go so over the top, with red, white, and blue everything, and more American flags on their body than their are flying at Arlington National Cemetery! It’s just too much and I don’t think you need to sacrifice your sartorial style to celebrate America and Brittany’s outfit proves my point.

Understated patriotism is my kind of style!

The stars on her shorts fulfill the patriotic requirement, but the rest of her outfit is understated and classic, an off the shoulder white blouse and simple jewelery show a fashionista who loves fashion and her country. I also love how the stripes on her shorts are super subtle, but still there, showing that these are indeed specifically Fourth of July wear, but not in a way that screams in your face.

This year I’ll be attending a wedding on the fourth, wearing my favorite find from the Summer Goodwill Trunk Show, but my tips to you savvy fashionistas who will be picnicking and enjoying fireworks, are simple. Pick one item that shows your patriotic pride, and keep everything else simple and comfy. And if you haven’t found your outfit for Saturday, DC area Goodwills are open today and tomorrow so you still have time to stop in and find that perfect patriotic piece! Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!
