Today we lost a legend. Willie Colón helped shape salsa into what it is, rhythm, resistance, storytelling, culture.

The song that always stayed with me is El Gran Varón. A painful, honest story about a son rejected by his father for being gay, about pride, love, and what happens when acceptance comes too late. That song forced conversations in our community that many were afraid to have when the song was released.

On Friday night, the day after Thanksgiving, I found myself surrounded by drums, voices, movement, and community inside a church filled with Bomba y Plena. And as I watched people of all ages dance, sing, clap, and just be, I felt reminded of something Isa always embodied: we’re meant to root ourselves in our people.

Bomba teaches that.
You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to know the steps.
You just step in, feel the rhythm, and let the community hold you. That openness, that inclusion, that’s how culture survives. That’s how we survive.
