TODAY Gender Mend as a part of Trans Art Fest is open April 18th 1-4 pm, 💫here is a peek at artist Leo Pontius ‘s work “Self Portrait”, made with canvas and acrylic paint.

The artist describes “ This work is constructed of a series of abstracted self portraits that have been cut apart and woven together. They overlap and spill out of the frame, reflecting the complex and ever-evolving nature of identity. It resists the collapsing of trans identity into a single, fixed, easily digestible narrative and expands into three dimensional space.”

“My work explores q***rness and shapeshifting as forces of illumination that reveal the cracks in codified systems. I seek the wisdom of the liminal, the discarded and the in-between. It is in these places that I reckon with the intrinsic connection between the spiritual and political. Drawing from my experience as a trans person, mystical spiritual traditions, posthumanist discourse and lgbtqia+ history, my work celebrates transmutation, alchemizing personal pain into tomes of hope.

I use textile techniques, such as basketry, embroidery, and sewing to root the work in q***r craft traditions. Materials like canvas, fabric remnants, and yarn are taken through cycles of accumulation, alteration, and reconfiguration. Canvas is painted, cut apart, and woven into a three dimensional form. Discarded fabric remnants are dyed, reshaped, and covered in embroidery. The work moves at the pace of relationship, slow and deliberate, allowing discomfort to ruminate and wisdom to emerge.

The final work is not only an object but a sacred vessel, a place for trans and gender nonconforming people to find refuge as well as an expression of my ongoing journey toward reclaiming interconnection and the fullness of humanity.”

The artist is also a TAC AIR 16 alumni and current artist in resident

Gender Mend as a part of Trans Art Fest is opening April 18th,👀💫here is a peek at artist Solena Aguilar ‘s work “Gender Marking Wreath”, made with fabric and wood.

The artist describes, “Gender Marking Wreath” is made up of clothes I have outgrown both physically and spiritually. The clothes represented a previous version of myself who was uncomfortable in the gender they were assigned. Cutting up the clothes relieves me from their discomfort and allows me to see them in a different light.”

Solena Aguilar (they/them) is a textile artist and author from San Francisco, CA currently foraging for fabric in Brooklyn, NY. Drawing inspiration from their Nicaraguan and Q***r background, Solena works to build community with storytelling and pattern making. They received their BFA in Art and Design from California Polytechnic State University.

In 2023 Solena published their first bilingual children’s book, “What Do You Need?/¿Qué Necesitas?”, a story about mutual aid and equity through the lens of a community garden. In 2024 they completed their first mural for an elementary school in Harlem entitled “Our Place” in collaboration with 30 elementary, middle, and high school students. In 2025, they produced and curated “LAYERS: All Trans Art Show” at Brooklyn Art Cave that featured 21 Trans artists whose work explored the complexities of the Trans identity. Through storytelling, exhibitions, murals, and collaborative workshops, Solena works to create accessible art that inspires connection and understanding.

Gender Mend as a part of Trans Art Fest is opening April 18th, 👀💫here is a peek at artist Hee Eun Chung ‘s work “Q***rean Jesus”, made through Cyanotype Emulsion on Stained Glass.

The artist describes, “I wanted to access my knowledge of Biblical stories I learned growing up and intersect it with my personal experience growing up as a Q***r Trans Korean. Through this fusion of religious and personal imagery, I aim to create a new narrative that is inclusive and affirming of non-binary individuals”

Hee Eun Chung is a Brooklyn-based multi-media artist specializing in experimental photography. A graduate of Parsons, The New School, with a Bachelor’s degree in Photography, they developed both a strong technical foundation and a conceptual framework that continues to fuel their commitment to pushing artistic boundaries. Their practice blends photography with unconventional processes, exploring new forms of visual storytelling through innovation and experimentation.

Hee Eun is recognized for a distinctive and introspective approach that delves into the intersections of their Asian identity and personal memory. With work rooted in lived experience, their photographs carry an authenticity and emotional depth that invite viewers into intimate dialogues about identity, transformation, and belonging. Their projects often balance vulnerability and participation, encouraging audiences to reflect on their own narratives while engaging with the complexities of spirituality and selfhood. By blending mediums and perspectives, Chung creates spaces where honesty, introspection, and dialogue flourish. Through evocative and boundary-pushing imagery, Hee Eun seeks to challenge cultural norms, inspire empathy, and celebrate the diversity of human experiences.

Gender Mend as a part of Trans Art Fest is opening April 18th, 👀💫here is a peek at artist Danny Sudberry ‘s work “Under the Stairs”, made using ink washed and torn canvas paper.

The artist describes, ”Therapy is crucial to my creative process. It has helped me understand the nuances surrounding my childhood and trans-generational trauma within the Black community. It has helped me see past my individual pain to rebuild a connection to empathy and love which is always built into my creative process. My work is centered around unpacking the trans-generational wounds that inform the sociopolitical state of America; primarily through the lens of my own intersectionality as a Black, trans-masculine, and q***r individual. Using acrylic paints, inks, and canvas materials to invoke a loud, raw, emotionally charged, and meditative state between myself and the viewer with the intention of directly tackling multitude of issues that oppress marginalized communities in and outside of America. Currently, I am challenging myself to move beyond representational imagery being the primary piece of my practice. Rather than plainly representing the dynamics of the oppressive hierarchical systems we live under; I aim to invite a more empathetic and nuanced approach through conceptual work to invite more radical thought into the conversation.”

How can we build a community of care? The Warehouse is a collaboration between writer and AIR 17 artist Vic Liu , abolitionist organizer Mariame Kaba, and Bedford Library in conjunction with BPL’s Justice Initiatives.

Inspired by Vic Liu’s book The Warehouse: A Visual Primer on Incarceration (co-written with James Kilgore), this exhibition spotlights 24 new paintings that examine survival and resistance within prison walls; the emotional distance between “inside” and “outside;” and approaches to community safety without reliance on prisons.

This project includes a series of free public programs that will accompany the exhibition at Bedford Library, including conversations, workshops, and community gatherings. Come envision a world where care, safety, and accountability can exist beyond punishment.

Thank you for leading such important work
