JECKONE -MY LIFE -The BAD BOY logo holds a special place in my heart as one of the most popular pieces I've created. Many people don't know it was a collaboration between me and the talented, late, great D. Ferg. who created the animated "baby," I created the lettering around it. Puff had the artwork from D. Ferg long before I added the lettering, and Puff used the animated baby on t-shirts for a youth basketball team he was sponsoring. During the same time The Notorious B.I.G. was in the studio recording the album "Ready To Die," I had the privilege of being allowed to visit the studio occasionally. One night, Puff mentioned that he was starting a new record label, naming it "Bad Boy Entertainment." I would usually leave the studio at about 3 am, and I was inspired, so I just started drawing a few different styles with the name Bad Boy in my graffiti-styled lettering, the same way I do my name Jeck One all the time. When he got to the studio that night, I shared the drawings with Puff. The character I used with the drawings looked like him; he looked surprised and said, "These are nice, but I want to use this baby." He dug into his briefcase and pulled out a copy of the animated baby on a letterhead that he had; I took the paper and photocopied it in the studio's office. I made a few copies, cut them out, cut the different Bad Boy lettering pieces I did, and placed the animated baby within all of them. A day later, at the following studio session, when Puff came in, he was busy doing a lot but still flipped through my art pieces. He singled one out, said, "This one," grabbed that one, and kept it moving. When it was time for him to finalize and print the official logo, he asked me where it was...I said, "You have it; you took it from me." He said, "Nah, you gotta find it; you don't have a copy? This was before I used Photoshop, so I didn't have a copy...everything I did was one of one. I couldn't remember the original one he picked, but I found a spot in the studio and created five more off the top of my head, and he picked "The One" that everyone knows today as the "BAD BOY" logo.
