Textiles are practical, tell stories, preserve culture, and very often are symbols of resistance.

“Nol” is the Arabic word for loom, and today we share with you a long time “brand crush” of ours 🍉 that has been telling their Palestinian story through fashion, textiles and embroidery.

From the villages in the hills of Jerusalam to Gaza, Ramallah, and Bethlehem, Nol work with family owned businesses, artisan workshops, and women's cooperatives ✨

The traditional and ancestral techniques they employ in their creations, such as tatreez (hand embroidery) and weaving are linked to a history of political struggle and resistance.

Some of our favorite pieces of theirs are made using old school handwoven (of course) Majdalawi fabric, a 100% cotton fabric from the demolished town of Al Majdal, which is and has been a critical element of traditional Palestinian dress for centuries. It was made in one of the last remaining artisan studios left in Palestine.

Since textiles have been made, they have been used to identify with a community, communicate values and beliefs, and as a form of cultural inheritance from one generation to the next. In recent times, textiles can also offer a quiet but important means of resistance: just think of Ghandi and his Khadi movement! If Khadi can unite a huge country as disperse as India was in the last days of the British Raj, what can tatreez do for Palestinians? I played around with the choreo from last week’s “Contemporary Pole + Composition” class. In this class I teach a short beginning of the phrase and then students add on their own individual movements to complete the phrase.
