A PIECE OF NEWTON FALLS HISTORY

We recently picked up this incredible group of early Newton Falls school memorabilia, including original 1908 and 1912 diplomas along with framed photographs of the graduating classes from that era.

These pieces are more than 110 years old and offer a rare glimpse into the students, schools, and history of Newton Falls at the beginning of the 20th century.

We absolutely love finding pieces like this that have a direct connection to our hometown and the people who came before us.

JUST IN AT FIELDVIEW ACRES MERCANTILE

A fascinating piece of early industrial history.

This antique Schäffer’s System electric blasting machine/detonator, believed to date from the late 1800s, features a heavy metal body, hand-operated plunger, electrical terminals, and its old leather carrying strap still intact.

Machines like this were used to generate the electrical charge needed to fire blasting caps for mining, quarrying, railroad construction, and other heavy industrial work.

We’re leaving it exactly as found, with all of its age, wear, and patina intact.

A fantastic piece for collectors of mining, railroad, industrial, engineering, or explosives history.

Absolutely incredible! The oldest books I’ve ever had!

250 YEARS OLD. PRINTED IN 1776.

This is one of those pieces that makes you stop for a second.

We just picked up a complete 7-volume set of the works of the Roman historian Tacitus, published in Paris in 1776 and edited with extensive notes and commentary by French scholar Gabriel Brotier.

That means these books are 250 years old, printed in the very same year the United States declared its independence.

The set includes some of Tacitus’ most important writings on ancient Rome, including his accounts of the Roman emperors, political intrigue, wars, ancient Britain, Germanic peoples, and the rise and fall of power inside the Roman Empire.

All seven volumes are still together, numbered 1 through 7, with their beautiful old leather bindings, raised spine bands, and gilt lettering.

Think about that for a minute. These books were already sitting on someone’s shelf while the American Revolution was unfolding.

JUST IN AT FIELDVIEW ACRES MERCANTILE

This is one of those pieces you don’t come across every day.

We recently picked up this incredible 1887 Buckeye Bell Foundry bronze bell, manufactured by Vanduzen & Tift of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Buckeye Bell Foundry dates back to 1837 and became one of America’s significant bell manufacturers. Vanduzen & Tift operated the foundry during this period, producing bells for schoolhouses, farms, hotels, public buildings, churches and other institutions throughout the country.

This example measures approximately 20 inches across the mouth and 17 inches tall, placing it in the roughly 100-pound class for the bronze bell itself according to period Buckeye sizing information.

Even better, it still retains its massive cast-iron yoke, large ringing wheel and original-style hanging hardware. There is still raised foundry/patent lettering visible beneath the oxidation on the iron yoke.

And we are leaving it exactly the way we found it.

No polishing. No sandblasting. No restoration.

Nearly 140 years of age, patina and history remain intact.

We also researched documented auction sales of other Vanduzen & Tift/Buckeye bronze bells, including an 1887 example that sold for $4,700 and another approximately 19½-inch example that sold for $4,780. Values vary considerably based on size, condition and completeness, but surviving bells with their original hanging equipment are especially desirable.

Fresh Pick and This One Is Wild

Just picked up this huge, one-of-a-kind 1977 painted canvas measuring approximately 53”X34”, and it may be one of the strangest and coolest pieces I’ve brought into The Merc.

The painting appears to be a hand-painted parody of the 1971 Moody Blues album “Every Good Boy Deserves Favour,” but with one very 1970s twist:

“Every Good Boy Deserves a Van.”

Instead of the original imagery, the artist painted a custom blue van hanging between the figures and added two men on the left, apparently holding a Coors beer bottle. The piece is signed in the lower right with what appears to be “Biond” or “Biondo” and dated ’77.

I’ve searched extensively and have not been able to find another example of this exact painting or wording anywhere online, which makes me believe this may have been a one-off commission or personal piece created during the height of the 1970s custom-van craze.

It’s weird. It’s nostalgic. It’s pure 1970s counterculture.

And it is absolutely the kind of thing that belongs at Fieldview Acres Mercantile.

If anyone recognizes the artist or knows anything about the history behind this painting, I’d love to hear from you. This one has a story somewhere, and I’d love to uncover it.

We’re starting earlier this year, and we’re already building something BIG for the 2027 Treasure Hunt.

Last year showed us what this event can do. It brought thousands of people into our community, introduced visitors to our local businesses, and put Newton Falls in front of audiences far beyond our area.

For 2027, we want to take it to an entirely different level.

We’re currently looking for additional sponsors who want to be part of this from the beginning. By joining early, sponsors will have more opportunities for recognition throughout the months leading up to the hunt, including exposure through local and national media coverage, social media, promotional materials, sponsor spotlights, and the continued growth of the event itself.

Our goal isn’t simply to create a bigger treasure hunt. We want to build something larger than anything of its kind attempted in our county, our state, our region, and potentially the Northeast.

But the real goal goes far beyond one event.

We want people to come here for the treasure hunt and discover a community they want to return to again and again. We want them eating in our restaurants, shopping in our stores, visiting our attractions, learning our history, and telling other people about what they found here.

And maybe some of those visitors eventually decide they want to live here, invest here, or open a business here.

That’s what this is really about.

Using one major event to create year-round interest, tourism, economic activity, and opportunity for our community.
