BRAKES!

Feathering, or modualting, is preferred over hard braking. It's important when mountain biking to be using the front brake more than the back brake, and this is why it's critical to not brake hard. Hard front braking will result in an endo, which results in losing teeth (unless wearing a full-face helmet), breaking bones, and friends laughing at you.

The front brake is your friend because it is most of the bike's braking power at about 60% compared to the back brakes' 40%.

The best way to feather is to use just one or two fingers on the brake levers, as demonstrated in this photo. Because this may be different from what most are used to, practice brake skills often. Find a steep grade, and control speed using only the front brake, but do not lock the brake. Practice going slow without stopping, then do the same thing using both brakes. Again, do not lock them up but go slow, homey. You never know homey.
