Pawnee Supply Co. – Structures #002 - Gatton’s Ice House
History - Located in southeast corner of Pawnee (near Jefferson and 3rd St.), Gatton’s Pond was a staple to the Pawnee community. Warmer months saw Gatton’s Pond busy with swimmers and canoes. The business associated with this body of water was Gatton’s Ice House, supplying the local community with ice for their household “ice boxes” (freezers/refrigerators before electricity). When the pond would freeze to a depth of 8-12”, horse drawn saws would cut solid blocks into 2’ and 3’ square pieces. These blocks would be loaded into the building pictured, insulated with sawdust, and continue to stay frozen through the hot summer months. These blocks of ice would get delivered to local customers via horse drawn carriage.
