The leg lift helper I started with either 3" or 4" rings
I use 2 strands of thread.
8 SC over one of the rings
row 1) CH 1 SC in back loops only in each stitch 8 SC
For remaining rows CH 1 SC through back loop and front loop left from previous row it is call thermo stitch
I make mine about 12" from the first ring
Slip stitching the next row add next ring by SC over ring and through both loops of SLST row

I start by deciding what stitch pattern I want to do. How many stitches are in this pattern? How many patterns will it take to make the width of length.

2nd I decide what my gauge is going to be. Do a small swatch to see what your gauge is.
Knowing these can help decide your chain to begin
