Chalkware is delicate and porous and so I almost passed on these due to the grime and being difficult to clean without use of water. Then I remembered an old cleaning tip shared by my mom. A simple white polymer eraser.

With a light touch, it lifted the marks without damaging the finish.

It’s always worth testing in an inconspicuous area first, since every vintage piece is different, but this pair cleaned up beautifully.

Sometimes restoration isn’t about making something look new, it’s about letting it look like itself again.

Before it held a reflection, it helped shape a hat.

This early to mid 20th century wooden hatter’s fl**ge was once used to form the brim of a gentleman’s felt hat. Its original size, brim width and pattern markings remain, along with the divots, scratches and honest wear left by years in the workshop.
