Moonstruck Vintage

Moonstruck Vintage Moonstruck Vintage offers an eclectic blend from the 40s, 50s & 60s; featuring items that exhibit classic design, great workmanship & vintage quirkiness!

Moonstruck Vintage was born out of my passion for items from the past, from housewares to fashion accessories, furniture to rusty relics that exhibit classic design, great workmanship and vintage quirkiness. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt, and few things make me as happy as digging through flea markets, estate sales and thrift stores to discover hidden treasures. I find beauty in the everyday piec

es from the past, as well as the rare and unusual. I love that buying and collecting vintage allows us to connect with and appreciate our history, and at the same time create our own unique sense of style. Shop Moonstruck on Etsy - http://www.etsy.com/shop/MoonstruckVintageXO

These lovely miniature shoes with silk embroidered flowers are beautiful to look at, but are the legacy of painful Chinese practice of foot binding.

Although I first heard of footbinding more than 20 years ago in the excellent book Wild Swans, and I had seen photos of the tiny shoes, I was unprepared for the reality of how small these shoes were. Especially when putting them next to my own foot. It was truly shocking....

For nearly 1000 years tiny feet were a cultural beauty ideal of the Chinese. To achieve feet that ideally measured no more than 4" long girls were subjected to a brutal and painful process that mutilated and deformed the foot to stop it from growing and attain the coveted "lotus foot".

Generations of Chinese women were essentially hobbled as the foot binding process began as young as age 4 with the process of breaking the bones and arch of the foot and wrapping tightly with bindings. When the girl's foot would begin to grow the process would be repeated.

Bound feet became a mark of wealth and status. Some felt that a girl must have bound feet in order to be considered eligible for a good marriage.

After several failed attempts, in 1912 the practice was officially outlawed by the Chinese government, but persisted in rural areas for several decades.

Researching these shoes was very thought provoking and disturbing, particularly because this practice was performed on young children who had no choice in the matter. I couldn’t help but think of how future generations will view today’s cosmetic procedures as strange and barbaric forms of body modification.

I was the 4th person in line at the estate sale, but my intended target purchase was sadly scooped up by the first person through the doors. On the bright side, my consolation prize was this lovely portrait.
