It's important that our Borough flies an LGBTQ+ pride flag during the month of June to show its commitment to upholding the rights of the q***r community. Pride month is centered around recognizing the efforts made by LGBTQ+ people at Stonewall back in 1969. Their fight against discrimination has brought us that much closer to the realization of equal rights for q***r people. Just as we recognize the triumph of women in gaining the right to vote and the progress the civil rights movement has garnered, it's important to recognize our society becoming more just and equitable for LGBTQ+ people and the work that still needs to be done. When the Borough of Etna flies the pride flag, it is to ensure that all people feel accepted, included, and welcomed. Everyone should know the lovely, welcoming community we have here, and flying a pride flag is one way we can demonstrate that
This year Etna is displaying a newer flag design called the Progress Pride Flag. Designed by nonbinary artist Daniel Quasar, this flag adds blue, pink, and white stripes to recognize trans and nonbinary community members. Alongside them, the Progress Pride flag also features black and brown stripes, recognizing the intersection of race in the LGBTQ+ community as well as memorializing those who have been lost to AIDS. These extra stripes highlight the added struggle LGBTQ+ community members have faced stemming from prejudice regarding gender, race, and ability. Their chevron pattern forms an arrow, pointing towards the progress that we need and can make to ensure equal rights for LGBTQ+ community members. We hope that all members of the Etna community reflect on this as we celebrate Pride.
