d then all the way to the northernmost point of the island chain, the Kure Atoll,
located just off the northwesternmost island in Hawaii; Green Island, which is joined to the Kure Atoll. Excluding Midway, which is an unincorporated territory of the United States, the Hawaiian Islands form the U.S. Hawaii was once known as the "Sandwich Islands", the archipelago now takes its namesake from the largest island in the cluster. The Hawaiian islands are the exposed peaks of a giant undersea mountain range known as the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain, formed by volcanic activity over a hotspot in the Earth's mantle. If these islands started at sea level they would be taller than Mount Everest. The Hawaiian islands are about 1,860 miles from the nearest continent, North America and approximately 2.300 from Japan. It has the distinction as being the most isolated land mass on the planet.
