Kathie R Kerler--Fiber Art

Kathie R Kerler--Fiber Art Hand and machine embroidery play a large role in my work both representational and abstract.

Materials include found and my own hand-dyed, but I also incorporate paper and other materials resembling fiber.

I have to thank the Columbia River Gorge Quilters for inviting me to be their featured quilter this past weekend. I've judged for them a number of times. I guess they thought I should be part of the show. This was a first for me as a judge. The guild is located in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge renowned for the Fruit Loop (fruit trees) and sail boarding. To top it off, the weather was warm and gorgeous.

So this was the last day for the SAQA benefit auction. I wanted to post my collection, so you all could see how lovely they look as an ensemble. I like that there are so many styles, techniques, and materials, one reason why I bid on each of them. As we say in judging, the composition keeps your eye moving around the quilt. You will not be surprised that I use them in my quilt judging seminar. Thank you to everyone who supported us. The funds will go toward supporting our international exhibitions. I happen to be in one in Heidelberg, Germany at this time!

Well, I'm officially out of SAQA Benefit Auction quilts to post. However, when I hung my first small group of them on the wall, I needed something to fill a spot. I chose this piece I created in a Richard Box workshop. If you aren't familiar with him, he is a renowned British embroiderer. I first knew about him when I lived in Montréal. There was a wonderful bookstore near me where I saw his books and was enthralled with his work. A few years later I began my London Institute of City & Guilds coursework and learned our tutor Gail Harker was good friends with him. A group of us asked if he would come to the Coupeville Art Center to give a workshop. He had quite a fear of flying. But after some time, Gail was able to convince him. I attended a drawing and an embroidery workshop with him. I spent a week on this small piece, which was a precursor to my "Z is For Zinnia, C is For Cosmos" quilt. I still love this style and need to get back to it. This is our next to last day of the auction. Please check it out and support us. Quilts are now only $150. www.saqa.com

"Flying Pears", at least that's what I call it, is one of the early SAQA Benefit Auction Quilts that I purchased. It's by an Australian. Unfortunately, I don't know the name because the label was sewn to the top right corner. There was no hanging sleeve, so I had to sew one on and it's over the top of the label. Now I wish I had moved the label. I really like the way the maker shaded the pear for dimension and painted gold on the pears to repeat the metallic gold in the background fabric.

Busy Day, and I forgot to post the SAQA Benefit Auction quilt-of-the-day. This one is by Therese May. She has been making art quilts for a long time and is well known in the art quilting world. I loved her use of glass "baubles", beads, rosettes, and what looks to be white puff paint. This is completely opposite the type of art quilt I make, but I so appreciate it and had to have it.

Today's SAQA Benefit Auction Post was created by Catherine McDonald of Prebbleton, New Zealand in 2018. It's titled "Three Wise Gnomes". I love all of the printed textures. Coincidentally, I began a dye printing class with Jane Dunnewold today.

Tomorrow begins the third and final week of the SAQA Benefit Quilt Auction. Here is last year's purchase. It's created by my friend and colleague in 20 Perspectives, an international textile exhibition group, Julie Haddrick. She lives in Australia and clearly loves the beach as much as I do. She has captured all sorts of treasures in this small quilt. For a complete description, I've included her label on the back.

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of judging for the Coastal Quilters of Santa Barbara-Goleta. My guide/host Carole Kennedy toured me around the area on day one. I want to share with all of my fiber art friends the most colorful quilt shop I have been to in awhile located in Carpenteria. The name as you can see is Roxanne's. If you are in the area, you will find supplies for quilting, embroidery, and gifts. Great selection of Singer featherweights. They ship them all over. I also want to say kudos to the guild members. I was impressed with the high caliber of their entries, particularly the art quilts. With three categories out of eight being art quilts, this is clearly an art quilting group. Evaluating was an absolute pleasure.
