This quote from James Baldwin's 1980 essay "Notes on the House of Bo***ge", published in The Nation, is chilling in it's truth.

Have you forgotten all the cuts to USAID?

"Epidemiological models and published research estimate that hundreds of thousands of children have died as a result of the cuts and dismantling of USAID. Tracking projects like Boston University's ImpactCounter estimate that over 500,000 children have died globally from the funding pauses and cuts, while a study in The Lancet projects that continued deep cuts could lead to 4.5 million child deaths under age five by 2030."

We know what lies ahead for many parents in this country, as they will be forced to make difficult decisions this winter when it comes to their budgets.

It’s time to face a hard truth about the upcoming election, one LGBTQ people have been forced to reckon with for decades.

The primary is our best chance to advance our rights, and that time has passed. At this point, we’ve got only two options: vote for the Democrat or stay home and hope other people do the work for you. The second has never been a winning strategy.

In a recent Substack article, my friend Mara Keisling, the founder and former executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, summed up the dilemma.

“We must vote for the candidate who is closest to our views across a wide range of subjects,” she wrote. “This includes LGBTQ policies, but also healthcare, immigration, and welfare—all issues that are deeply impacted by the party that is in power.”

Several Democrats on the ballot this year are less than supportive of trans rights. For years, some in the party opposed civil rights protections for g**s and le****ns or marriage equality too. We still prevailed. We didn’t do it by staying home and complaining.

Some folks couldn’t vote for Kamala Harris because of the Biden administration’s blind eye toward the Palestinian genocide. Instead, we got a president who gleefully bombs schools full of little girls in Iran.

We could have influenced Harris to withdraw support for Israel’s carpet bombing, but the Trump administration doesn’t give a damn what we think. We’re left holding “No Kings Day” protests and clutching our pearls when Donald Trump renames the Department of Defense the Department of War.

Some far-right social media influencers, politicians, and preachers have called for trans people to be incarcerated or publicly executed. Trump embraces that scum and welcomes them to the White House and into his administration.

Neither civil rights nor any of the other myriad liberal issues stand alone. Refusing to vote for Harris over [insert progressive cause here] led to trans people being banned from the military (again), the end of critical HIV/AIDS research, and reduced funding for q***r teen shelters.

DIVINE was born on this day in 1945.

"1945 - DIVINE, American actor born (ne Glenn Milstead) (d. 1988); best known for his drag persona, Divine. In the 1970s, Milstead starred as Divine in a number of New York City theater pieces, including Tom Eyen’s classic camp women's prison drama, Women Behind Bars, which was a major off-Broadway hit in 1976, playing the lead role of the evil matron, Pauline. Divine returned to the stage in another Tom Eyen off-Broadway play, The Neon Woman, where he played the role of Flash Storm, the owner of a sleazy strip club plagued by a series of murders...

In 1988, the British film The Fruit Machine, also known as Wonderland in the United States, used Milstead's songs in a nightclub disco dance sequence that showcased an early Robbie Coltrane in drag as "Annabelle", the club's owner (a cross between Divine and Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz).

Late in his career, Milstead also played in non-drag roles in his last three films: Trouble in Mind, Hairspray, and Out of the Dark. In Hairspray he played two roles, one male and one female (which he had first done in the earlier Female Trouble).

Here’s what Divine had to say about his “Edna Turnblad” (and honey...he ain’t no John Travolta!):

“For all those people who always thought I was nothing more than a drag queen, wait until they see what I agreed to look like in Hairspray! Drag queens are supposed to be hung up on glamooouur. Meanwhile, on my first day on location, I came out as Edna Turnblad--in my flip-flops and hideous housedress, with varicose veins drawn on my nubble-shaved legs and everything that is wrong with me accentuated, schlepping along in these pin curls and barely any makeup--and I walked right by the crew. Just kept going. Not one person on the set recognized me or even noticed me, because I looked like half the women in Baltimore. I had to go up to John and stand face-front for him to realize who I was. He was thrilled. I was crushed.”

Alison Jablonsky is a Unitarian Universalist minister at Arlington Street Church and a customer of Adam's Nest. When she was in the shop over the weekend, we were talking about Dolly Parton; she mentioned she'd just given a "DOLLY THEOLOGY" sermon, and I asked her to forward it to me.
