Classic photo and archive in Raleigh history.
Children are seen near Chavis Heights Market on the corner of East Lenoir and Swain Streets in Raleigh, December 1940. The Ligon House is seen just behind the store. This house was built c. 1915 for John W. Ligon, a Black educator, pastor and businessman. In 1953 the newly opened Ligon High School was named in his honor.
This small brick store building was constructed about 1930 on Rev. Ligon's corner lot and was operated by the Ligon family until around 1970. It was demolished in early 2005.
