Heidi Taschen is a small, handmade business based in Connecticut, located about an hour outside of New York City. I often say that it’s a small-batch production shop where you can find locally handmade, Merino wool f

elt handbags made one at a time in my studio space. It all started when I discovered this gorgeous, thick, soft and colorful wool felt in the years we lived in Germany. I’d spent a lifetime sewing clothes and later costumes, and then took an about face, using a completely new material, and started a business. As my small business begins to grow, I include and experiment with a greater variety of work, from small pouches to larger totes. At the heart of it all are the small pouches, embroidered in a sort of free-hand style I use on 2 of my 4 sewing machines: I sketch with the machine. I’m lucky to have family support that can create creative and resourceful shop storage, beautiful artisan fair display items and working surfaces that are made mostly from re-purposed materials.
