Why does it cost so much to replace a zipper?
Because the zipper will be removed from the item. In the case of a backpack, this will include deconstructing enough of the item to reposition the zippered feature and then close up the deconstruction.

This post represents the preparation phase of the replacement project.
I will post the process as I put it all back together.
