Today we’d like to introduce you to Davi Gadd.

Davi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am the owner and founder of Scraps Quilting. I started my business about 14 years ago and just recently joined Etsy. I am married, my husband Bryan, and I have six children and thirteen grandchildren.

My wonderful grandmother taught me how to knit, crochet, sew and quilt. I remember my grandfather paying me when I was 10 years old to knit rows on my sweater my grandmother was teaching me to make, so I could enter it in the county fair. Those were fun, amazing memories I have of my grandparents.

So, the excitement to sew and make things were instilled in me at a very early age. One year, I got a sewing machine for Christmas, I remember I was 13 years old. My friends didn’t understand my excitement in a sewing machine, which they thought was a silly gift from Santa.

But I absolutely loved it. I started making my own clothes and other creative things I could make. I would sew together quilt pieces for a quilt and my grandmother, mother, sisters and I would sit for hours hand quilting it together. Well times have changed, and I have an APQS Millie longarm quilting machine. My grandmother was 95 years old when I had her come to my house and look at my new exciting quilting machine. It was hard for her to understand how it worked. She loved all of the things I would show her that I had made with it.

I love sewing, quilting, and crocheting. All my grandkids know they will get a handmade quilt or something special for Christmas or their birthdays. My daughters and daughters-in-law always knew I would make a lot, I mean A LOT of things for any new baby. They know I have a stash of baby items for them to give to friends and neighbors for their new babies. I love making baby receiving blankets and burb clothes with hand crocheting around the edges. I make personalized baby blankets with the new baby’s name, birth date, weight, inches, and time of birth embroidered on the blanket. Making it a special keepsake for the new mothers.

I enjoy making Minky blankets, they are so soft and everyone loves Minky. I make them all sizes and colors, with different stripe pieces on the front and a solid Minky on the back, quilting them together for a durable blanket. All of my grandkids and children have asked for their own special Minky blanket made with the colors they have picked out. My dad calls his, the sleep blanket because whenever he uses it to watch TV or cuddle with, he always falls asleep.

I have enjoyed making special orders, table runners, custom quilts, and T-Shirt quilts for others to enjoy.

I made a special graduation T-Shirt quilt for a customer. Her mother asked me to make it for her daughter’s graduation gift. The mother had saved t-shirts, some of her baby clothes, some doll clothes, and Barbie clothes she use to play with and ask me to incorporate them into the quilt. Then she asked each grandparent, her brother, father, and mother to donate one of their t-shirts along with a saying or a quote from them to be embroidered next to their shirt for the backside of the quilt.

What a wonderful treasure it turned out to be. The daughter didn’t know it was being made, so when she opened it and saw her own t-shirts, baby clothes, doll and Barbie clothes, then the backside with the grandparents, parents, brothers t-shirts and sayings she cried. She was so excited to take it to college with her, knowing she would have their love with her at college.

If you are needing a special customized graduation gift, I would love to make you a T-shirt quilt. I hope whoever receives a Scraps Quilting blanket, baby blanket, quilt, table runner, or t-shirt quilt will feel the love that goes into making them. I LOVE what I do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth ride.

When I got my longarm quilting machine and started using it, I cried, ‘what have I done’, I am not very good at it. There was defiantly a learning curve on how to use it. I had to Practice, Practice, Practice, so my children and grandkids got a lot of things that weren’t so good. As time went on and I used it more and of course Practiced, I did get better. My husband has been my best supporter of what I do.

He has always been there with support, loving comments, money to support my quilting paying for my machine, and letting me vent to him when I needed someone to listen to me. It has taken many years of practice, learning, and patience to get to where I am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love taking the time to piece together quilts, whether is it from a pattern or something I have made up. I really enjoy T-shirt quilts, putting the shirts together in different blocks, turning the shirt to the side or a little tilt to make it special, then adding the other material around it to make them all fit together. Finishing it and giving it to the customer and feeling a great accomplishment and that satisfying feeling of a job well done.

I have made a lot of babies receiving blankets and burb clothes, I hand crochet around each one. When I am watching TV, traveling, flying, or camping, I usually have crocheting to do. I like to keep my hands busy. I have made way too many, I tell my daughters when I die they will find them and wonder what to do with them. I am going to donate them to the hospital or another charity where they can be used.

I am most proud of being able to make something with my hands and giving a homemade gift to others. The lost art of crocheting, knitting, or making quilts is something to be proud of. Nowadays, it is easier to just buy it already made, but making it homemade and personalized makes it an extra special gift.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
As for what matters most to me. Is that anyone buying my items or getting my items as gifts will love them as I do.

I want to cuddle with a baby in a loved blanket that I made just for them. I want a child to have their own blanket that they picked out and they love and feel comfort and warmth. I want my children and grandchildren to live every moment, cherish what they have, be grateful, be kind, be humble and live your fullest every day.

Work hard, play hard, love hard, family is always important no matter your age. Love each other and be a loving, understanding, compassionate people. What you do in life matters, how you treat other people, how you made them feel, they will always remember.
