Join us for an online workshop on White Supremacy in Leftist Spaces. We didn’t get to where we are today by accident. While it’s easy to place blame solely on the right, it’s imperative that we also look inward and examine how white supremacy operates within progressive movements and spaces. Together, we’ll draw from our own lived experiences, and those of the group, to explore how these dynamics show up, persist, and can be actively challenged.

While cleaning houses in 1850s San Francisco, a Black woman named Mary Ellen Pleasant took notes.

She poured coffee. She folded linens. She collected information: stock tips. Land deals. Whispered secrets about which bank was expanding, which railroad was coming, which property would triple in value.

She absorbed it all.

Then she went to work.

Pleasant bought laundries. Boarding houses. Dairies. Restaurants. Real estate across the city. When racism blocked her name from appearing on deeds, she partnered with banker Thomas Bell, who held investments in trust while she pulled the strings.

By the time anyone noticed, she had built an empire worth millions.

But money wasn't her endgame.

Pleasant funneled her fortune into the Underground Railroad. She handed John Brown $30,000 for his raid on Harpers Ferry. When San Francisco's streetcars refused to let Black passengers board, she sued. And won. Thereby desegregating the system in 1868.

The city's elite turned on her. Newspapers called her a witch, a manipulator, a threat. They tried to bury her name in rumor and slander.

Her response?
"I'd rather be a co**se than a coward."

Mary Ellen Pleasant turned invisibility into her greatest weapon. She built wealth in a system designed to keep her poor. She bought freedom in a country built on slavery. She transformed silence into power.

May we all carry her defiance, fortitude and courage forward.

A worthy reminder from our High Priestess Patti Smith:

The people have the power
The power to dream, to rule
to wrestle the world from fools
it's decreed the people rule
People have the power
WE have the power...

I used to think coming out was something only other people could do. I'd hear their stories and feel so jealous. Even if the outcome wasn't awesome, they had the courage to do it.

Finally, one day, out of necessity, I did too. I'm not going to lie, it was pretty terrible. But I survived it. And in time, all the things I'd been told (and believed!) to be true, turned out to be nonsense: I started a business. I have 3 kids. My friends didn't abandon me. I realized that the more comfortable I felt with myself, the easier, and happier, life became. I went from thinking I could never come out to becoming the President of St Pete Pride and helping organize one of the largest Pride celebrations in the country. It was a wild and liberating experience!

I don't usually celebrate National Coming Out Day publicly, but this year feels different. Heavier? Our street murals are being erased. Our rights are being overturned. Prides are being defunded. And so I want to remind myself, once again, that it's counterproductive to make decisions from a place of fear. Now more than ever, we have to own our truth and fiercely defend it!

The intimidation tactics are real and designed to push us into submission. Take this as your reminder that there are still more of us who oppose him than support him. This is not the time to back down. On Saturday, we rally. No Kings, October 18, in cities everwhere.
