Frank Costanza was supposed to be a very meek, henpecked husband, and Estelle was supposed to be more controlling and overbearing.
Jerry Stiller played Frank that way for about 4 days of rehearsal and didn't feel like he was performing well. Stiller was afraid that he would be recast and felt he had to do something to keep the role.
On the day of filming he began raising his voice and yelling at Estelle when delivering his lines. Everyone loved it, including Estelle Harris because it meant he would be the "crazy one" and she could be more prim and proper.
