Rae here, with a heavy but full heart, I am announcing the closure of my brick-and-mortar business, which has been the single hardest decision I have ever had to confront. This decision had been lurking around long before I had to courage to admit it.

I wish I could blame the volatile economy or the insane taxes that we pay to aid in the development of a city or country that don’t have our best interests at heart. I wish I could blame the uncertainty of a demolition that has been looming over our block for the last few years, the financial hardships I’ve found myself in, or the crippling debt I’ve accumulated while trying to maintain this business.

But the truth is, my heart just isn’t in it anymore.

When I first opened Shadowplay in May 2021, there was excitement in the air about new businesses—businesses that survived Covid or better yet, born from it. I was so lucky to have opened when I did; culturally, people were in a place of prioritizing their homes, they prioritized art and artists, makers, designers, chefs, restaurants, mom and pops, and small business owners of every kind.

The “world was opening back up,” and Salt Lake City had an openness about her. It felt like people were hungry for a community; they were hungry for something new and unique, and vintage was, and still is, in high demand. Nothing could have prepared me for the quality of people I would meet and the unparalled experiences and connections I have made just by putting myself out there. I have had the honor of meeting so many people—people eager to connect, new people who had just moved to Salt Lake City, old friends popping in for visits, new friends that have now turned into some of my deepest friendships. I got to cultivate a network of likeminded people who have now grown into a rich community, my community.

I’ve passed hundreds of items into the hands of incredibly creative, unique, and wonderful human beings who have supported me over the last 3 years. Since 2021, I’ve spent every waking moment of my life invested in Shadowplay.

SATURDAY REMINDERS

Just a reminder that your house doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to have things you love inside of it. You don’t have to purchase flowers at Trader Joe’s, you can still hang hats on the wall despite what anyone says. Your business posts don’t always have to have something for sale, and nobody is going to care about that editing error in your last post. Life your life however you please but, for the sake of small businesses… shop with them on the weekends they really look forward to it every week.

Open 11-5 Wednesday through Saturday

Our door will be wide open on this gorgeous spring day, see you there!

REAL TALK

This is a message from me, Rae… the owner of a classic little brick and mortar business. If you’re not already aware, brick and mortars are a dying breed as the rise of online shopping and downtown development gains more and more power. I am beyond lucky to be physically where we are at downtown, on our little block of vintage shops and to be with other vintage shops who are pushing through despite the obvious changes in how our businesses operate. I understand the value of touching, interacting and connecting with what we sell and the biggest factor of all, the connection we have towards each other.

A lot goes into this business, I am physically at the shop most days working on projects, rearranging, photographing, cleaning, staging, and hauling furniture in and out. It’s become increasingly more difficult to create content and post online. Sometimes I ask myself “why do I have to do this to make money?” It’s clear that posting to social media is a huge factor in this business, I feel required to create enticing content to incentivize people to come visit the shop. I get it, it’s convenient, it’s modern, it’s part of the game required to play to pay the bills.

Should I hire a social media manager? Probably. Do I have the money to pay someone valuable to do the job? Absolutely not.

But some days I really wonder why, what happened to strolling into shops and allowing something to call to you. What happened to searching locally before searching online? What happened to visiting shops for the sake of human connection and a sense of community.
