Hello spring.... and our first 90-degree Texas day of 2024. In honor of the incoming color I'm posting some of the hand-dyed yarns I have been working up for weaving and knitting. New old work is finally on the cutting table. I started working with indigo and shibori almost 15 years ago and I'm currently revisiting my older fabrics for inspiration. Needless to say I truly wish I could reproduce some of the lengths of cloth that yielded the most unique and exuberant patterns. Creators live in the haze of planned happenstance :)

Lets talk about Turkey Red.... ground Madder root dyes the most glorious rich orange red colors and was widely used in the 18th and 19th century all over the globe. It's one of those old timey colors seen in the US in old quilts, flour sacks and printed chintzes. The few skeins I dyed have the most glorious luminescent color and are all natural plant color.

Natural dye colors are always drop dead gorgeous and have a intense color that always seems alive. This batch of superwash merino includes indigo/myrobalan, avocado pits, yellow onion skins and that amazing sap green is purple onion skins. I think I'm going to add naturally dying skeins and fabric to my regular to do list to weave with and list online.

Natural Indigo dye is endlessly fascinating and so much more than the color blue. I've been playing around with the process for years and after a while we kind of hit it off. This piece of cloth is made by clamped indigo resist using wood blocks.

Vintage 1940s Levis Strauss Shorthorn Moto Zipper Jacket. This early Levi's ranch wear is 100% authentic as my mother used to wear this and purchased it in the 60s when living in LA. Either she purchased it embroidered or did it herself - as she was likely to do. It has a beautiful dark indigo color and tough supple hand indicative to jeans material of this age of Levi's jackets. This rare jacket has the sanforized (preshrunk) short horn 1940s Levi's label at inside back, TALON zipper and the "pearl" snap covers and snaps are labeled DOT SNAPPERS. This jacket is even more rare due to the use of a zipper rather than front snaps. Embroidered on the chest and upper arm with what look like Native American designs (papoose and horse) - 1.5" w x 2" h papoose on the arm and 5" w x 2.25" h horse on the chest. It also appears that my mom nipped in the waist to make this jacket even more fitted as this style was produced cropped and was supposed to sit well above the hips. This piece does have wear which includes threadbare at the end of the cuffs, a 3/8" threadbare area at the pleat above the left cuff, threadbare area around the initial part of the zipper and raw hems on the interior where the waist was taken in.
