A call to resist dictat0rship, this chant is rooted in the Philippines political movements of the 1970s-80s . It translates to “Fight! Do not be afraid!”This chant continues to be relevant among the Pilipino diaspora as we stand in solidarity alongside our neighbors against f@scist and imperi@list powers. We are stronger together.

One of my MOST asked (non-SW related) questions at events is “what does kapwa mean?” 🇵🇭 Kapwa is a pre-colonial indigenous Pilipino concept that centers interconnectedness and shared humanity. To practice kapwa is to build community 🫂

The history of these phrases is more recently rooted in the movement against f@scist dictatorship in the 1970s-80s in the Philippines. “Makibaka! Huwag matakot!” translates to “Fight! Do not be afraid!” 🇵🇭 This call continues to be relevant among the Pilipino diaspora as we fight alongside other communities against imperialist, colonial powers. We are stronger together!
