FRIDAY FISHING TIP _ Gaffing

Once you've pulled your big fish up to the boat where it's ready to gaff, NEVER pull the fish' head out of the water. Fish can easily shake off the hook with a couple of head shakes. Always try to maintain the fish on it's side which gives you a better opportunity of getting an accurate gaff.

Fishing Tip of the Day
Live Bait Fishing:
Yellowtail, like many other species that feed on the surface, can be taken on a lively fly-lined bait. Fly-lining means fishing a live bait pinned straight to a hook and nothing else. If fish are holding a little deeper however, you may also try an egg sinker as well. This is one of the most effective methods of catching fish in the summer.

A) Match the size of the "live bait" hook (that's how they are advertised) with the size of the bait. Sizes 1, 1/0, 2, 2/0 will be good for anchovies and sardines, but you'll need to go with the bigger 5/0, 7/0 hooks with mackerel and squid.

B) Lob your live bait when casting out and always keep your line STRAIGHT in front of you as you follow the bait along the rail when it swims away from the boat. Follow these two steps and you'll avoid many backlashes, tangles and headaches.
