One small step forward for copper critters on the east coast.

Two days ago, May 4th, 2022, Florida Fish & Wildlife heard the pleas of the Treasure Coast & Mosquito Lagoon communities and has declared an executive order making all redfish catch & release in the Indian River Lagoon system.

While this action is very just (though a bit overdue), east coast redfish are not holistically saved because of it.

We must now refocus our efforts and amplify our messaging around water quality and habitat restoration. We need to improve these coastal ecosystems by removing our waste water, reducing nutrient loading and restoring seagrass density if we hope to one day see an IRL teeming with happy, healthy tails.

Let’s cut right to the point while we cut bait:

Catch and release is the right next step for the Indian River Lagoon.

This Wednesday, FWC will meet in Gainesville to discuss a new memorandum for redfish management in Florida. Included in this proposal is a proposal for C&R only in the IRL.

The IRL ecosystem is suffocating from increasingly high fishing pressure and high nutrient loading. The redfish in this system need any breaks they can get - and the local community is calling for (long overdue) changes in management.

For redfish to flourish in the Indian River Lagoon, we need to rebuild the missing menu.

Over the last two decades, water quality degradation has led to the extermination of most seagrass in the IRL, which once stood as the crucial building block for this estuarine food pyramid. A grip & grin with a blade of grass has become less frequent than one with a trophy fish.

Crabs, shrimp and small baitfish have two things in common: they need seagrass to survive and redfish love to eat them.

We urge FWC to make the IRL catch and release only for red drum until we can stabilize the lagoon system and rehabilitate vital habitats. Give them a break until we can right the wrongs we've done to their home.

FWC will be hosting a Proposed Redfish Rule Memorandum Meeting next Wednesday, May 4th in Gainesville.

This memorandum would be long-overdue legal protection and reduction of harvest that gives IRL redfish a fighting chance as we continue to try to solve the water quality and habitat issues plaguing this iconic fishery.

Make your voice heard for redfish in the IRL.
