Last week I failed horribly. I wanted to do something clever and efficient and I just fumbled. I had been saving several white pieces of clothing that I wanted to keep for myself and dye into something beautiful while also using up my rit dye stash. Well at least I used up some of my stash. Many people have told me to stop using rit because it doesn’t give bright results and often fades very quickly. I agree with that, but I also don’t want to waste what I already have so I decided to do something creative and fun. I also tried using a higher concentration of dye to water to try and get more saturated results.
Well here’s the truth. I really fu**ed this up. I prepped well and even wore gloves this time and let everything soak in its concentrated hot dye bath overnight. But then I put everything (I did reds and pinks and greens and blues) in the wash together and wow, what a mistake. They all came out dull and all the colors mixed. I threw everything back into the wash by color and it brightened up some but all these colors together look like crayon vomit to me. I hate it. I almost cried. There was a beautiful dress that ripped in a couple places, a knit top from White House | Black Market 😢, a jumpsuit, and these thigh high socks. I cannot express how ashamed, defeated, and just bummed I am. 😞
I truly don’t know how to fix it. I don’t feel inspiration to rework these things, especially when the color is such a mess. I am sad that I finally got around to making something for myself and every piece went so horribly wrong.
I want to throw all of these things in the trash and forget it ever happened but I won’t… yet. I need to recover from this loss and take a look at it later when I’m not so upset. I wanted to share this because one its the only creative thing I’ve done lately and well, its content, but two, I also want to share that everyone makes mistakes, even those of us with college degrees in our fields. We just usually don’t share it. Here’s to all the mistakes that are merely stepping stones to success. 🥃
If anyone has any suggestions on what dye I should buy and more importantly where to find it (I’m in Canada) please say so in the comments! 👇
