The Village Clothier (2026)

If you've been following our journey since last summer, before the initial opening of our shop, you might remember how special these girls dresses were to me and how much I poured into making them.

My husband and I have talked a lot about it since then. They haven't been as popular, and part of the reason I think is that I haven't done a good job of showing them off as much as my skirts.

We also underpriced them for the amount of work that went into them, and we've been wondering whether it would be sustainable to keep making them.

Our plan was to put a little more focus on talking about the dresses and showing them off, and see it would be wanted if more people knew about it.

And if not, we'd keep them for our daughter and just focus on women's clothing for our shop for now.

I know it's not a popular style, and a big reason I wanted to sew these dresses is to offer a more versatile and natural fiber alternative to the typical children's dresses you find in stores nowadays.

But I am really uncomfortable with these comments I've been receiving, and I don't know if I want to keep showing off these dresses if it's going to open us up to more of them.

It's something we're going to continue to talk and pray about and keep you all updated with what we decide.

Our son's birthday is also a very special milestone for me.

I was a couple weeks post-partum with him, when I started learning to sew, 4 years ago.

Or rather, I think it's more accurate to say, God taught me to sew. Because I was just never able to pick it up before. It never made sense to me and seemed to hard and complicated.

But suddenly, after my second child was born, I threw myself into it and seemed to have infinite patience and endurance to figure it out in between late night nursing sessions, while my body was still healing and we were adjusting to new routines as a family of 4.

As I figured out how to sew and embroider, I made little personalized gifts and gave them away to anyone who crossed my path. I did the same when I started sewing aprons, skirts and dresses. I must have spent hundreds of hours sewing and giving away my creations.

Later, my husband made a little shop page for me on his website and I started selling my creations. Sometimes making just a few dollars for the hours of work, but I was so happy that my sewing was improving enough that people actually wanted to pay for it.

Between then and now, there were seasons where I didn't sew at all for several months. Our family went through a lot of trials and losses and there were times where I wondered if I would ever sew again. But I offered it to God and accepted that if He gave me the gift of sewing just for the one season, then I would give it back to Him.

It turns out, that was not the end of my sewing journey. Through a lot of prayer and discussion with my husband, my works continued, taking a new, more focused direction.

Now we have our family-owned shop, and I am not only sewing, but I am teaching other young women to sew, so we can hire them as they get ready to start their own families. We're planting seeds that will hopefully bloom and grow to become a blessing to many families beyond just ours.

For now, we're celebrating our son's 4th birthday and soon we'll celebrate the birth of our 4th child, as our family continues to grow.

It's been quite the 4 years - both for family life and my sewing journey, and I wonder what the next 4 will bring for us.

A little update on how things have been going since we opened up shop again.

I'm working on plaid, gingham and solid color options for the drawstring skirt. I was hoping to have them in the shop alongside the florals, but the florals are almost sold out! Most of the headscarves have also sold which I am so happy about.

If you could pick one of the floral options to keep as a regular in the shop, which one would you choose?

I got some olive wood buttons to use on the village dresses I sew. Aren't they so pretty? 🥹

They're coated in a protective wax and they're supposed to be washable and long lasting so hopefully they live up to that because I would love to have this be my go-to button style!
