My Honest Take on Running a Product-Based Business From Home
There’s something very cute about the phrase “I run a product-based business from home.”
It sounds peaceful.
Like I wake up, make a coffee, answer a few emails, lovingly package some orders in a sunlit little studio, post a Reel, and then spend the afternoon being a present mother while passive income gently rolls into my bank account.
That is not what happens.
What happens is there are currently boxes in places boxes were never intended to be.
My house is a house, a warehouse, a photography studio, a shipping department, a receiving dock, an office, a daycare, and occasionally a small-scale OSHA violation.
And somehow, I am every employee.
I’m the buyer.
The photographer.
The website person.
The customer service department.
The inventory manager.
The shipping department.
The marketing team.
The accountant until the accountant absolutely needs to get involved.
The janitor.
The person who orders the tape.
And, unfortunately, management.
Management is tired.
The funny part is that when you start a product business, you think the hard part is going to be selling the products.
Wrong.
Sometimes the hard part is figuring out where the hell to PUT the products.
Because inventory is exciting when you order it.
You’re like, Oh my gosh, these are going to sell so fast.
Then six large boxes arrive at your front door and suddenly you’re standing in your living room realizing you have accidentally opened a distribution center.
And every product has its own little emotional journey.
Some things arrive and sell immediately.
You feel like Warren Buffett.
Clearly, you understand commerce.
You are a visionary.
Then there’s the product you were POSITIVE everyone was going to lose their minds over.
You order twenty.
Nobody wants it.
Not one person.
Now you just live with them.
They’re family.
You see them every day.
Eventually you stop asking, “How am I going to market these?” and start thinking, “What if I just put them all in a box and drive away?”
Then there’s inventory management.
Which sounds very professional until you realize sometimes it means walking around your house saying:
I KNOW I HAVE ANOTHER ONE OF THESE.
Because Shopify says you have one.
Your eyes say you do not.
And now this is a criminal investigation.
Meanwhile, running the business from home means there is absolutely no separation between work and life.
I can make breakfast, answer a wholesale email, change a diaper, print a shipping label, unload the dishwasher, photograph a purse, step over a Hot Wheels car, answer a customer question, realize I haven’t eaten, package three orders and start dinner without technically ever “going to work.”
Which sounds convenient.
It is.
It is also completely unhinged.
Because there is no closing time.
You don’t leave the office.
You live in the office.
I can walk past inventory at 10:47 at night and suddenly remember something I need to add to the website.
Now I’m working.
I can sit down to drink coffee in the morning, see a box that needs unpacked and—
Now I’m working.
My husband can ask, “Are you working today?”
Sir.
I have no idea.
I am always working and somehow also never working because half of it happens barefoot while holding a toddler.
And then there’s social media.
Apparently it is no longer enough to own a business.
You must also become a full-time content creator documenting yourself owning the business.
Pack the order.
But WAIT.
Don’t pack the order.
Set up the tripod.
Move the coffee cup into the frame.
Okay, now pack the order.
Pretend you didn’t just spend four minutes positioning your own hand.
And God forbid you forget to film something interesting.
You will immediately realize afterward that it would have made GREAT CONTENT.
The internet also gives you the impression that everybody else’s business is absolutely crushing it at all times.
Someone is celebrating a $40,000 launch.
Someone just sold out in seven minutes.
Someone has a warehouse.
Someone has twelve employees.
Meanwhile I’m sitting on the floor surrounded by leather bags wondering why the label printer has suddenly decided it no longer recognizes Wi-Fi.
But here’s the part nobody really explains:
You can be growing and overwhelmed at the exact same time.
You can have your best sales week and still wonder if you’re doing any of this correctly.
You can sell out of something and immediately panic because now you have to buy more of it.
You can desperately want more orders while simultaneously looking at the orders you already have like,
Please. I am only one woman.
You can have thousands of dollars in inventory and feel broke because apparently all of your money has reincarnated as handbags.
You can look around your house one day and realize the little business you started has quietly taken over an entire room.
Then a closet.
Then another corner.
Then the dining room table “temporarily.”
Nothing in a product business is more permanent than something you put somewhere temporarily.
But I also wouldn’t trade it.
Because every once in a while I stop running around long enough to actually look at what I’ve built.
There are real people carrying things I chose.
Stores in places I’ve never been have my products sitting on their shelves.
People come back and buy again.
Something that existed entirely in my head became an actual business operating out of my house.
And that’s pretty freaking cool.
So yes, running a product-based business from home is flexible.
It is rewarding.
It is exciting.
It has given me the ability to build something while raising my kids and living an actual life instead of waiting for the “right time” to do it.
But aesthetically?
Please understand that somewhere just outside the frame of that cute Instagram photo is probably a cardboard box, a half-drunk coffee, seventeen things that need to be listed, a toddler toy, inventory that needs somewhere to go, and me wondering whether buying more inventory is a business decision or a diagnosable condition.
Probably both.
Anyway.
Support small businesses.
We need the shelf space.
