It’s been a while since I posted a hat, but had to share this one. A ‘Nam vet came in for a 7x beaver fedora. While we were talking, he pulled out a piece of the helicopter he was on while serving. It’s the hatband now!

She KNOWS what she wants...
and she wanted a cattleman crease with a traditional leather hatband that she could wear everyday...plus a little "extra" that would dress it up for events...plus a couple of feathers that she could change out...plus a wide brim for sun protection...plus a color she could wear with most of her wardrobe.
A re-purposed leather belt with heavy silver embellishments, a recycled portion of a necklace, a few feather pins and the blended fleece of Jesse James and Ice (see them at PacaHat.com/About) made it all come together. The inside is stunning too; deep midnight blue satin...beautiful inside and out...just like its new owner, Jennifer!

Some call it a Quigley, a Tom Mix or a Gus style. Many think of it as a 10-gallon hat...and while it is big, it does NOT hold anywhere near 10 gallons of water! There's a theory that the name “10-gallon hat” is actually an imported term from south of the border. According to History.com that name is believed to have stuck because Mexican cowboys (vaqueros) wore hatbands called “galóns” on their hats (sombreros). A “10 galón” sombrero was said to be large enough to hold 10 hatbands. Another theory says that "10 gallon" is derived from the Spanish phrase “tan galán” which loosely translates as “really handsome”.

Straw VS Felt hats...when to wear them, why you wear them and how to wear them.

When it comes to western hats, warm weather is supposed to indicate the beginning of “straw season.” This signals the end of wearing wool, fur felt, or felt blend hats until the temperatures drop and/or the snow flies again.

To this, we say BS (and that doesn’t stand for BUY STRAW!)

WE JUST FINISHED SHEARING FOR 2022!
When someone sees the amount of fiber we get when we shear, I often get asked "do you do anything else with your alpaca fleece?"

Silver Spur Ranch takes part of the fiber for our PacaHat creations (pacahat.com) and has the remainder made into yarn. Some skeins are left natural colors, others we solar dye. To solar dye, we process the dye bath using the heat from the sun, instead of a microwave or pot on the stove. We then custom package and label it as "Made in Tabernash, Colorado."

You can see, feel and purchase this yarn exclusively at The Fabric Nook in Granby. Tell Tina we said "hi" and "thanks for supporting us!"

PS - We have also used the raw fleece to insulate our chicken coops. Alpaca has an R-Value of around 26!

PSS - And we've heard fleece works wonders in the garden to keep down the weeds. Haven't tried that yet...it was 19 degrees yesterday morning (the first day of SUMMER!) So much for global warming in our area!

A local artist requested "something like Stevie Ray's"

The custom alpaca hat customer then told me a story that he was supposed to attend a concert and ended up not going. It turned out to be the last concert that Stevie Ray Vaughn ever performed. I was honored that PacaHat was allowed to create the tribute...
