Something really beautiful is happening in the bookstore world right now.

What started as me making a few items at my worktable has turned into 60+ pieces already heading to another indie bookstore and more stores joining the conversation every day.

This is Bookstores Against ICE.

Not a trend. Not a marketing angle. A grassroots, bookstore-led fundraiser supporting Community Mutual Aid Network MN and RAICES, two organizations doing real, direct work for immigrant families.

Here’s the part I need people to understand:

100% of profits are donated. Every dollar.
I am making these items out of pocket in my tiny studio because bookstores are community spaces first, and community care isn’t optional.

No store has to pay to participate. No gatekeeping. Just bookstores choosing to stand on the side of people.

Because stories matter. Because families matter. Because human rights are not political.

**Community Update from Shelf Indulgence, Pasted from Discord**

Hi friends,

we want to share a few important things we’re doing right now as a bookstore and as a community space.

📚 **Bookstores Against ICE Campaign**
We’re helping organize a Bookstores Against ICE initiative alongside other independent bookstores. We’ll have specific merch tied to this campaign, and **100% of proceeds from those items will be donated directly to organizations** providing immigration legal aid and support to impacted families. This is about using our platform, our space, and our reader community to create tangible support.

🤍 **15% of This Week’s Revenue Donated**
In addition, 15% of all store revenue this week will be donated to Community Mutual Aid MN. We will share donation receipts with the community by Friday for transparency and accountability.

🔔 **Free Whistle Kits Available **
We also have free whistle kits available. These are small personal safety tools that can help people alert others and draw attention in situations where someone may feel unsafe. No purchase is necessary and no questions will be asked. If you or someone you know would feel safer having one, they’re here.

Shelf Indulgence will always be rooted in care, dignity, and community. We can’t fix everything, but we can show up in the ways we’re able and we’re grateful to do that alongside all of you.

This year was never just about selling books.⁠

From our very first day with the doors open, to shelves emptied and restocked again, to readers finding us from 31 states, we watched a dream turn into a living, breathing community. You showed up. You trusted us with your stories. You chose to shop small, loudly and intentionally.⁠

Together, we sold THOUSANDS of romance novels, made hundreds of blind-date matches, and packed two entire Subaru’s worth of food for our community pantry - turning love on the page into love in action. That part will always matter most to us

At Shelf Indulgence, our commitment has always been to create a safe, inclusive, and respectful space for every reader who walks through our doors. Because of this, we hold the books we stock to a standard that aligns with our values as not only a company, but as people

After careful review and consideration, we have made the decision to no longer carry titles by Elsie Silver. This choice is based on harmful and inappropriate descriptors used in her work when referring to people of color. While authors and stories can be imperfect, language that dehumanizes or perpetuates racial stereotypes is something we take seriously, especially in a space that serves a diverse and vibrant community.

We understand this decision may disappoint or upset some readers, and we truly apologize for any frustration this causes. Our priority is, and always will be, fostering a bookstore where everyone feels seen, valued, and respected.

Thank you for your understanding and for standing with us as we continue to build a bookstore rooted in care, accountability, and community.

We’ve been getting so many messages asking if our space can be used for parties or celebrations… and we’re excited to finally open our doors for private event rentals at Shelf Indulgence.

Whether you’re planning a birthday, a bridal shower, a private shopping spree or a cozy celebration with friends - our bookstore makes the perfect backdrop.

A quick clarification:
Book clubs are always free. Our back room will remain complimentary for traditional book club meetings, just as it always has.
Event rentals are for celebrations, parties, or gatherings that include food, decorations, photography, special setups, or extended use of the full store.
