Rest in Peace, Michael Wright (April 30, 1956 – August 19 (or 21st), 2026) | 55 film credits

Michael Wright was a phenomenal actor who left a lasting impression with his intense, emotionally charged performances. Throughout a career spanning more than four decades, Wright developed a reputation for portraying complicated characters whose anger, vulnerability, pain, and unpredictability often existed just beneath the surface.

He made an early impression as Clinton in The Wanderers (1979) before delivering a powerful performance as Carlyle in Robert Altman’s Streamers (1983). Wright went on to memorable roles in V (1983–1985), The Principal (1987), Sugar Hill (1994), and HBO’s Oz (2001–2003).

However, Wright will forever be remembered as Eddie King Jr. in The Five Heartbeats (1991). As the immensely talented but troubled lead singer of the group, Wright gave Eddie an unforgettable mixture of confidence, charisma, addiction, anger, heartbreak, and vulnerability. His performance helped make Eddie one of the film’s most memorable characters and remains one of the defining roles of Wright’s career.

Whether appearing in a leading role or as part of an ensemble, Michael Wright had an unmistakable screen presence. He could bring tremendous intensity to a character while still allowing audiences to see the humanity underneath.
