Stella D’oro cookies were on sale this week and I put two packages of the Swiss Fudge cookies on the shopping list for my (wonderful) husband to pick up. I haven’t had them in over 40 years, and I did not stop to think about why I suddenly wanted them. My brain did not acknowledge it, but my heart knew.
When I was growing up, if we needed to bring something to synagogue to share, my mother always picked up Stella D’oro because they are parve, which means they can be eaten with either milk or meat. We didn’t (and I still don’t) keep a kosher home, but she taught me that you always bring something everyone can eat without having to question it.
My husband did the shopping yesterday, and when he came home last night, I saw the cookies and broke down in tears.
Yesterday marked 31 years since my mother passed away.
My childhood was filled with trauma, and those memories still have a way of rising to the surface and overwhelming me. The emotions are part of why I struggle with focusing on listing and posting, especially when combined with my ADHD.
It has, however, helped me understand why I am drawn to and . They show moments from other people’s lives, and for a little while, I can focus on their memories instead of my own.
When you’re out on the hunt, have you ever seen something that stopped you in your tracks because it resonated with you?
