This post has been a long time coming. Most of this brand’s followers live in Philadelphia, so THANK YOU to everyone in Philly who supported Held Gear in any way. It was an amazing scene to jump into and it was a blast. So many cool, weird, talented people live in Philly.
Founded in 2008 by Micah Perry in Portland, relocated to Ajo, Arizona in 2015, then moved to Philly with me (Sean), and now with me back to Southern Arizona (Tucson), it’s truly held thru everything.
We now have the opportunity to work together, but so close yet so far, it’s a two hour drive, so it’s still basically remote. He did get a wholesale order with his sister’s shop in Maupin, Oregon, and that was awesome. And I have a plan now for future wholesale customers.
It was six months ago already that I moved into this small office building in the heart of Tucson, right between the business and arts districts. It has been a slow process, each task performed when the time was available, but a lot has come together. For starters, with an LLC and tax license, I can operate properly as a business. One immediate advantage is wholesale ordering. Now my orders are tax exempt, and I can buy directly from apparel brands. I already have tees ready to print from Royal Apparel, as a matter of fact.
Also, this location allows me to meet with customers directly. They can be measured for a belt and have it made on the spot. They can just save on shipping because they can pick up here. And I’ve been reaching out, trying to find my community here. It’s a smaller pond though.
Tucson necessarily slows down in the summer because it’s very hot and the population thins out. What I’ve learned is that in the fall, the vending season rebounds, the streets are crawling with tourists and new college students, local shops start picking up traffic, and so I'm not a moment too soon to pivot from all of this presentation and planning to straight up marketing.
See you in the streets, Tucson.
