Ēwe hānau o ka ‘āina
Natives of the land

From our ‘Iwi 2025 Scholarship
Here are some amazing photos taken by our applicants. It brings me lots of joy to know our youth are aware of the natural elements around them that tie us to this place we call home. It makes me happy to know that through the strong connection between Kanaka and ‘āina, future generations will continue to honor that connection and makes efforts for the protection of native species and spaces the need to survive.

Long live the natives!

April is Native Hawaiian Plant Month but every month and everyday should be a day to learn more, to honor, celebrate, and mālama our native Hawaiian plants.

Photos by former Baldwin High School students include “Ihi, Ohai, Koki’o Ke’oke’o, Koki’o ‘ula’ula, & Pōhuehue.

Hawaiians found many ways to use these plants to help with daily living for eating, medicine and functioning. But an important component is its ability to absorb water, feed our native birds and insects, help with soil runoff, and survive naturally together without the help from kanaka. Living here in Hawai’i before the first Polynesians, native Hawaiian plants & species made Hawai’i their home before any human being.

Many of our native plants that are seen and found here in Hawai’i and are not found anywhere else in the world making them rare and special.

Waiwaolani honors these beautiful plants through the surface patterns worn on Waiwaolani clothing.

Let’s pay our respects to the beautiful native Hawaiian plants that call Hawai’i home this month and every month.

Merrie Monarch week is here. May we enjoy this week of hula, culture, art, food, fashion, mele, and good company. May we hear Hawaiian language be spoken, sung & chanted. May we smile and show Aloha, give hugs & honis. May we remember King David Kalākaua & his love for hula and ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i and all those who came after him to carry the legacy.
