What better way to welcome summer than a quilt covered in butterflies and flowers?

The front of this comfy flannel rag quilt features squares of the signature butterfly print, including the sentiment “you are loved,” on a bright white background, alternating with solid squares of vibrant deep sky blue. The flip side has squares of the same bright blue, alongside squares of solid lavender.

Like all rag quilts, this blanket is clipped and raggedy on one side and smooth on the other. Each square is quilted with a layer of light flannel, as well.

The quilt was assembled, the seams were clipped, and then it was machine-washed and dried to fluff it up and start the ragging process. The blanket will get softer and will shed fewer fibers with each subsequent wash.

Measures 33” wide by 39” long, the perfect size for a stroller throw or tummy time; all new materials; 100% cotton; made in a pet-free, smoke-free home to minimize allergens. Machine wash cool and gentle, tumble dry low, remove promptly. $35

Something a little different...

This is an inlaid rag quilt with “caterpillar” seams between the blocks. You’d have to look closely to see that the Winnie the Pooh fabric squares are sewn onto the center of the khaki-colored homespun squares and are not included in the seams. That’s considered an inlay and allows the edges of the Pooh fabric to create additional fraying.

Those squares are then sandwiched with a light layer of ecru flannel and a bottom layer of the khaki homespun, and each square is quilted in the traditional “X” design. So now there are 4 layers of fabric but, because one layer is quilter’s cotton, two layers are homespun, and only one layer is the more substantial flannel batting, the quilt is surprisingly relatively lightweight and snuggly.

But I think the most interesting part of this quilt are the caterpillar seams, so-called because they do resemble fat fuzzy caterpillars. The clipped seams create a beautiful fringe because of the particular fabrics used.

The blanket was assembled, the seams were clipped, and then it was machine-washed and dried (twice) to fluff it up and start the ragging process. The blanket will get softer and will shed fewer fibers with each subsequent wash.

But be aware that, due to the extra raggediness of this method, the quilt will continue to fray a bit and you may find loose threads to clip now and then. Clipping the loose threads will not affect the durability of the quilt. I would suggest giving it a good shake before each use, just to make sure there are no threads for little fingers to find.

This type of blanket uses more fabric than my usual quilts, as a result of the extra layer, so it’s a bit more expensive. It also takes more time to create because my old reliable Singer is just not that speedy, nor am I.

Measures 32” wide by 38” long; 100% cotton; all new materials; made in a pet-free, smoke-free home to minimize allergens. Machine wash cool and gentle, tumble dry low, remove promptly. $47

If you are a dog lover like me, this one’s for you! Designed by mother-daughter duo Leanne and Kaytlyn for Henry Glass Fabrics, this panel lists a dog breed for each letter of the alphabet. Who knew there were dog breed names beginning with the letters U, X, and Z?!? I sure didn’t.

What struck me about this fabric panel, besides the soulful eyes and adorable renderings of each dog, was the fact that so many of our most-loved breeds have origins from all around the world. From the Portuguese Water Dog and the Old English Sheepdog to the Havanese (Cuba) and Tibetan Spaniel...and don’t forget the Vizsla (Hungary) and Xoloitzcuintli (Mexico).

Each square was top-stitched, with all thread ends sunk within the quilt layers, so no random threads for little fingers to pull. Then the panel was bordered in turquoise and self-bound, double top-stitched, and backed in black with mini white paw prints.

Measures about 27” wide and almost 4’ long, quite a bit longer than most of my quilts; 100% cotton with a layer of flannel as batting for a bit of loft and weight, pre-washed, machine wash cool and gentle, tumble dry low, remove promptly.

Just in time for Easter! Kids are always thrilled to find chocolate bunnies, malted milk eggs, and jelly beans in their Easter baskets but, if you’re looking for an alternative to all the candy, these handmade fabric marble mazes would be a great surprise.

There are 4 different mazes, ranging in size from 6”x6” (very simple) to 9”x11” (more challenging). The 3-layer fabric pockets are sewn together, the maze is created (double-stitched for durability), a marble is inserted, and then an extra seam is sewn around the edge to secure the marble in place. One side of each maze is patterned; the other side is a solid color, which makes it easier to actually see the lines of the maze.

The challenge is to move the marble through the maze using your hands and fingers. It’s a relaxing activity, perfect for kids who like to fidget, or for those times when boredom sets in and patience is required (a long car ride comes to mind).

Because the mazes contain a small marble, very young children should be supervised while playing. But, I guarantee this unique little treat will bring a smile to your child’s face!

Unicorns, castles, and rainbows...like a fairy tale come to life!

The front of this all-flannel rag quilt features squares of a cute nursery print in shades of aqua, lavender, and pink on a pale pink background, alternating with squares of solid soft lilac. The back has the same checkerboard pattern.

Like all rag quilts, the blanket is clipped so it is raggedy on one side and smooth on the other. Each square is individually quilted in the typical x-pattern with a layer of light flannel, as well.

The quilt was assembled, the seams were clipped, and then it was machine-washed and dried to fluff it up, ensure colorfastness, and start the ragging process.

Here is a flannel rag quilt with a slightly different twist—this one has scalloped edges, a unique look perfect for the little girl already in your life or the one still on the way! Alternating with solid rosy pink blocks are blocks of a sweet nursery print proclaiming, “I woke up this cute!” The back is of the same design.

Like all rag quilts, the blanket is clipped so it is raggedy on one side and smooth on the other. Each square is individually quilted in the typical x-pattern with a layer of light flannel, as well.

The quilt was assembled, the seams were clipped, and then it was machine-washed and dried to fluff it up, control shrinkage, and start the ragging process. The blanket will get softer and will shed fewer fibers with each subsequent wash.

Measures 33” wide by 39” long, the perfect size for a stroller throw or tummy time or just cuddling; all new materials; 100% cotton; made in a pet-free, smoke-free home to minimize allergens. Machine wash cool and gentle, tumble dry low, remove promptly. $35

Just in time for Valentine’s Day...a sweet rag quilt of tiny pastel scattered hearts on white flannel, accented with solid bright pink blocks. Each time I look at this fabric I think of those little conversation heart candies on every store shelf right now. This quilt would be a great gift for Valentine’s Day, but honestly it would be perfect for whenever you have a little sweetheart in your life.

The quilt is done in the (most common) checkerboard pattern. The back looks the same but with smooth seams. Each square is quilted with the traditional “X” stitching, and a light layer of flannel is used as batting.

The blanket was assembled, the seams were clipped, and then it was machine-washed and dried to fluff it up and start the ragging process. The blanket will get softer and will shed fewer fibers with each subsequent wash.

Measures 33” wide by 39” long; 100% cotton; all new materials; made in a pet-free, smoke-free home to minimize allergens. Machine wash cool and gentle, tumble dry low, remove promptly. $35

I know I say this way too often 😊, but this really is one of my all-time favorites. The little bits of advice offered by the nine friendly forest/woodland animals (be kind, be grateful, be gentle, be curious, be humble, etc.) are truly words to live by. Perfect for both boys and girls...

I believe it’s never too early to encourage positive character development in our children and grandchildren. I could see sharing the messages on this quilt with a child at the end of every day as a form of affirmation (“Today I was kind, today I was thoughtful,” and so on...)

Hand-pieced, machine-stitched, sashed in a deep rich brown, leaf-pattern quilter’s cotton. Then double-bordered, first in pale green and then in the brown sashing fabric, and finally self-bound and backed in the pale green.

Measures about 35” square, 100% cotton with a layer of flannel as batting for a bit of loft and weight, pre-washed, machine wash cool and gentle, tumble dry low, remove promptly. $35

Ballerina bunnies! So cute in their little tutus!

The front of this comfy flannel rag quilt features squares with ballerina bunnies on a soft ivory background alternating with solid squares of deep rosy pink. The flip side has squares of the same rosy pink, alongside squares of black with white dots.

I rarely make use of black fabric, but I love how the black is in such sharp contrast to the pink and ivory on this particular quilt. You can see how the black ragged seams really help the squares stand out on the front of the quilt.

I make quilts with the hope that the eventual recipient will love the colors and patterns and design and coziness.

I’ve made more than 550 quilts so far, and this is one I would have been tempted to keep. A friend requested a custom-designed quilt in shades of grape, lavender, and white to go along with her granddaughter’s nursery colors.

The quilt is made of two layers of 100% cotton homespun with a flannel layer of batting.

What is homespun, you ask? Before fabrics were mass-produced, women wove their own fabrics at home, hence the name “homespun.” Today homespun fabrics are machine-made but still have the look and feel of primitive homespun—very soft, usually in plaids or stripes, and looking exactly the same on both sides of the fabric.

When making rag quilts, different fabrics result in different final appearances. The clipped seams of a quilt made of quilter’s cotton lend a shredded appearance; using flannel, the seams give a ruffled appearance; but I especially love using homespun for rag quilts because the “ragged” part of the quilt actually resembles a fine fringe.

This particular blanket is a bit larger than my usual, comprised of 42 blocks, each quilted with the traditional X-design. It measures about 39” wide by 45” long.

The blocks are sewn into rows and then
the rows sewn into the entire quilt. Each seam is clipped every quarter-inch or so and then the blanket is washed in order to start the ragging process. It will get softer with each wash.

Made in a pet-free, smoke-free home to minimize allergens. Machine wash cool and gentle, tumble dry low, remove promptly.

If you are interested in a homespun quilt, you are welcome to let me know. But know that they can be quite expensive, depending on desired size and the number of different fabrics chosen. I’ve made several over the years. They hold up well and truly become heirlooms. 😊
