An eagle flew into a college football stadium during the traditional pregame flight and did something no one expected. Instead of returning to its handler as usual, it veered off course and landed in the stands. Not just anywhere, though, on the arm of the only Native person in attendance.
Out of tens of thousands of fans, the eagle chose them. It was calm, steady and almost purposeful. In a place where Native presence is often overlooked or sidelined, this moment felt deeply symbolic. You couldn’t have planned it, and you couldn’t have missed the weight of it either.
