🪡 Progress 🪡

My replacement new overlocker arrived this morning so I started working on my sons Halloween costume for daycare straight away.
It’s been the perfect project to get used to the overlocker with since it’s not massively important if it looks fantastic at the end (since it will probably only be worn once)
Also I have zero yellow thread 😅

I’m almost done but the last part will be the hardest most fiddly part.

⚙️ New Machine ⚙️

My new overlocker arrived yesterday, I was so happy but after using it for a little while, at this point just testing it out, I realized there was an oil leak from the top, and it must have been leaking prior to arriving because there is a yellow stain on the machine.

The shop has been contacted and I turn they contacted the maker and it was decided that tomorrow they will trade the one I currently have for a new one.

I’m disappointed that I can’t use it today, but I’m glad it’s being handled so quickly.

🪡 Progress 🪡

While I’m waiting for the overlocker to arrive I’m avoiding do any actual sewing.
However I have/will cut out fabric for two projects I want to do straight away.

The yellow will be for a Charlie Brown shirt for the kiddos daycare Halloween party, and the Pokémon fabric will be for a new pair of pajamas for kiddo.

I will probably get more fabric cut before the end of the week ready for the overlockers arrival.

Pretty much counting down the days now.

⚙️ New Machine ⚙️

I’ve been wanting to get a overlocker for here in Japan for a while now, but they are mostly ridiculously expensive compared to prices in Australia.

I finally found this one, and better yet I found a even better price for it online.
So it was ordered last week and should hopefully arrive this weekend.

One of the biggest problems I have had has been my interest waning in a project during the double hemming process since it can be so fiddly and time consuming, having a over locker will let me keep everything neat in a lot less time and much less effort.

I already have a list of projects I want to finally get done once it arrives:

Finally finished these test pajamas!
Honestly they were done for a while now excluding the buttons, and I just finally got around to adding them.

As stated above these are a test set, I wanted to test out the drafted pattern on some left over fabric before using the fabric I actually want to make pjs out of.
The fabric was left over fabric from a shirt I made for myself.
I got it a while ago but it was in the 500yen ($5) for 2M section of the nearby fabric store.
Despite it only being a test I think it looks pretty good, there are a few things I want to do differently on the next turn but overall it’s not bad especially for a test run.
And kiddo looks good in it!

Almost done!

It needs a good iron, but apart from that I only need to attach the push buttons.
I was about to attach them when I realized I don’t have enough of the outer parts (you need the same amount for the outside and inside) so when I have a chance I will need to grab some more from the shop.

But considering this was a practice run I’m pretty content with this.

🪡 Progress 🪡

It’s been a long time.
My phone pretty much stoped working for a while, but now that I have a new phone that works and takes photos, I can finally update.

My current project is a simple pair of toddler pajamas.
My intent at the start of this was for the fabric to be test run of this drafted pattern, but I actually really like how this fabric looks.

The pants are done, just need to finish the shirt.

✨Finished Product✨

After a lot of trial and error (and my machine basically eating my last attempt after it temporarily broke) my first proper scratch sleeve bolero is done.

This really has been a long process, I drafted the pattern myself, made a few test ones out of cheaper fabric, made a lot of alterations to the pattern, then I got the fabric I wanted to use, followed by the great machine malfunction, and then even this particular bolero was such a time consuming process...
I think in total it took about 9+ hours.

The fabric is organic cotton on the outside and ice silk on the inside and for the mittens.
The part that makes it so time consuming is needing to be so slow and careful when seeing the fabric together in order to avoid bunching since the two different fabric has such different levels of stretch.

But as hard as it’s been I’m so proud of this in particular.
It’s something that will actually impact my sons wellbeing, childhood ezcema, especially in such a young child who can not stop them self from scratching, is such a hard thing to cope with.
These sleeves make it a little bit better.

(He is still able to hold and pick things up while wearing these sleeves)

I think for my next one I may make it a little bit bigger, but other than that I think the pattern is pretty much set.

⭐️New Material ⭐️

A little bit ago I went to a different store (from my normal nearby store) to look at fabric, was able to get some really good stuff for a good price.
In totally about 5m of different fabric (not all are pictured) for around ¥3000 (around $30 without the exchange rate factored in)

Also I need to make a lot more anti scratch sleeves for my son since his old ones are getting a bit tired, so I got some more fabric to make additional scratch sleeves, all organic cotton for the outside and ice silk for the inside and the mittens.

😓Machine Problems😓

A little over a month ago my machine decided to eat a pin while I was sewing anti scratch sleeves.

I was able to get the pin out but for a while afterwards the tension was weak no matter what I set it at, stitches were being dropped, a lot of problems along those lines.

Luckily it’s fixed now with thanks to the Internet it didn’t cost a dime.
I’m finally getting back into sewing now that it’s fixed , so I’ll be updating more frequently from now.

✨Finished Product✨

This dress has had a long life already, I actually started it atleast two months ago but there had been a lot of breaks in between.

This was actually the first dress (even before the new born dresses) I had made in around 10 years, so I made a fair few mistakes, and it’s not the neatest result, I also nearly changed the whole thing last minute (I even had a whole new bodice cut out last night) but thanks to the super adorable print it’s still a cute dress despite my mess up 😅

It’s now on its way to a special little girl, I hope she will enjoy wearing it and remember he dealt beloved departed cat while she plays in it.

Also I actually made a matching shirt for my own son out of the same fabric.

⭐️New Materials⭐️

This super cute fabric arrived in the post today.

My son actually suffers from eczema, and with the humid muggy summer starting where we live I can already picture eczema flare ups in our future.

One thing that I found that really helps are scratch sleeves.
Scratch sleeves are basically a shirt or bolero vest with closed off sleeves (think attached mittens) it makes it harder to scratch (a bad habit when sleepy for my son) and unlike regular mittens they can not be easily removed.

The only problem is that they are kinda hard to get here in Japan, so a while back I decided to make my own, and while I was happy with the outcome regarding the pattern I drafted, the fabric choice was not the best in hindsight.

This fabric is 100% cotton, it’s smooth touch and super cute to boot!

For eczema sufferers the best fabric is usually 100% cotton and silk.
I couldn’t find what I wanted at my nearby small sewing shop so I ordered this and cooling white silk (not yet arrived) online.
The plan is to slightly adjust my previous pattern (although I was happy with it, I can see possible changes for improvement) this fabric as the outside and the white cooling silk as an inside lining.
