This might be unpopular but this book was just okay. Judging from my Goodreads and my friends' reviews I'm definitely in the minority on this one. I'm not sure that Chris Whitaker's writing is for me. All the Colors of the Dark and We Begin at the End have both fallen short of the hype for me. I still can't pinpoint what it is that keeps me from loving these stories like so many of you do. There's something about them that are forgettable for me — perhaps it’s the pacing & length? I finished this book a few days ago but still had to peek at the book synopsis to recall what this book was about 🤦‍♀️ That's not totally uncommon for me with as quickly as I read, but if I can't remember the storyline a few days later... it's just not a 4-5 star read. I liked it, but didn’t love it.

My favorite part of this book: The fiesty, Duchess Day Radley, legendary outlaw.

I've really enjoyed several of Stacy Willingham's books so I had high hopes going into this one. This story follows Claire, an investigative journalist, who returns to her hometown to discover the truth about her sister's disappearance twenty years prior.

I found it entertaining enough, but also wasn't wow-ed. The back story was promising, but I expected more from the unveiling of secrets -- it felt more like the main character just happened to be in the right place at the right time for most of the unveiling which fell short for me considering her investigative journalist career.

It's not my favorite Willingham book, but I'll definitely still be back for her future novels! (My favorite is All the Dangerous Things, followed by A Flicker in the Dark, then this one, and lastly Only If You're Lucky, which I didn't actually care for).

Read if you enjoy: slow-burn suspense, true crime vibes, & family dramas.

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This is 100% a Bookstagram-made-me-do-it read! The storytelling was exceptional. I really loved how this was a story of how one individual (the giant, Gabriel) impacted the lives of a whole small-town community. The story is never told from Gabriel's POV but always from others. The contrast between Amish life and “English” was fascinating and only added to the story.

I really struggled how to rate this one and wavered between 4.5 & 5 stars. It made me cry at one point, which doesn't happen often!! *But* there was an element of the backstory and ending that I wish hadn't been included/had gone a different way. It was also a bit too sports heavy at times for me (yet also felt appropriate for the storyline).

This will be a story that I won't forget and I'd recommend picking up if you love a beautifully written, emotional read -- it's an ode to life, poetry, art, literature and most of all family (the one you're born into and the one you find).

🎧 Well done multicast narration that's easy to get lost in! I especially loved Christina Moore's narration of the grandmother, Hannah.

Had the chance to retreat with some of my favorite ladies earlier this month. We had quiet time, prayed, updated each other on life, picked books for our group for this year and had a lovely time together.

This book was a great blend of mystery + historical fiction. I found the premise of generations of women descended from Robin Hood that are stealing jewelry to help those in need intriguing, although I don't necessarily agree with it. The dual-timeline, which alternates between 1940s Paris and modern day, is well-done and compelling. I hate when a dual timeline story that leaves you wishing one hadn't been included (but this was not that)!

As much as I was intrigued by Colette and her family's Robin Hood thievery past, there were just too many coincidences in this story.

If you've read some of Kristin Harmel's novels, what is your favorite or what do you think I should pick up next??

I was surprised my unread pile was only four books! Maybe I’ll go back and get more 😂 When I have the chance to sit and read a physical book, I keep prioritizing non-fiction over my fiction pile.

Thank you .audio and for my early listening copy of FINDING GRACE! It was one of my favorite summer reads.

This is a book that's best read going in blind which makes it trickier to review. Trust me that you don't read too many reviews on this one. I loved that this book surprised me and I loved the themes of grief, friendship, family and so much more.

🎧 I really enjoyed the narration and would definitely recommend it!

All weekend I’ve been so heartbroken and trying to find words, but there really aren’t words for our neighboring community here in the TX Hill Country 💔 I've been glued to the news and praying for miracles!!

Lord, we pray for comfort for those who have already received devastating news of the loss of their loved ones and lift up those who await news. We pray for all the first responders who continue to work tirelessly. Praying for the days ahead and healing, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Confession time: I totally judged this book by its original cover and almost missed out! 🙈 First of all, I thought it was a memoir at a glance and honestly didn't pay much attention to the rave reviews 🤪 Second, it was just uninteresting (and didn't fit the book now that I have actually read it) 😆 It ended up back on my radar recently and I'm so glad I paid closer attention because this was a bingeworthy read!

Short synopsis: A young couple heads to his family's cabin in Vermont for the weekend Simon, the boyfriend, comes home without Nina. This story is the aftermath of Nina being missing and how the families respond.

I really loved the perspectives from both sets of parents and the lengths they would go to for their children. This story also dives deep into how case details and rumors spread (and get manipulated!) through the media.

While I devoured this one, don't go in expecting a super twisty psychological thriller. It's more of a character-driven mystery. I couldn't put it down and really enjoyed it! I’ll eagerly pick up more of McTiernan’s work in the future!

I'm a big fan of 's work, having loved "Habits of the Household" (read it twice!) and "Made for People." So it was a no-brainer to pick up his first book, The Common Rule, for my book club this month. It's clear how his later works grew out of the wisdom in this original gem!

The Common Rule offers four daily and four weekly habits designed to help us create routines that intentionally live out our love for the Lord and our community. I really like that this book is written for Christians in all walks of life with practical, relatable ideas to establish rhythms. Whether these particular habits speak to you or not, you'll find encouragement to do more meaningful things by doing fewer things with intention.

📖 I'd recommend this one in print over audio because of the diagrams and resources available in the print edition. Also recommend reading with a friend, spouse or group while trying to implement some of the practices within its pages.

Oh and there's a new Youth Edition of this book that came out earlier this month. I plan on adding it to my son's high school reading list!
