It feels like your baby was finally sleeping…and then, suddenly, everything changes.

At around 4 months of age, your little one’s sleep biologically changes. What does that mean? They start to develop more distinct cycles of sleep that start to resemble that of an adults, with non-REM and REM cycles.

And as they transition through these stages of sleep, parents may notice:
💤 More frequent wake ups overnight
💤 Shorter naps
💤 Increased fussiness during the day
💤 Difficulty settling and re-settling
💤 Previous techniques that worked well in helping them fall asleep suddenly aren’t as effective

Additionally, at around 4 months of age, your little one is no longer a newborn. They may be more alert, curious to the world around them, showing their personality a little more, and learning new skills (such as rolling). And this too can have a big impact on sleep.

And while it may feel like their sleep has ‘regressed’, in reality, they are going through a big developmental milestone, and their sleep cycles are maturing.

If you are needing support and guidance navigating the 4 month sleep regression, or any other sleep challenge, is here.

Transitioning my daughter to a big bed seemed like a simple milestone… until mornings became a little chaotic.

She started waking earlier, and I’d find her sitting up in bed with the light on, quietly playing with her toys. I’d remind her of our bedtime rule:
“Stay in bed until your light turns green.”

And then it hit me… she was following the rule!

She was doing exactly what I told her. She was in bed, technically “following the rule,” but not in the way I had imagined. She was literal.

It made me realize something important: kids often follow the letter of our instructions, not the spirit.

So I used my own knowledge as a Sleep Consultant and got specific. I broke the bedtime rules into tiny, clear steps:
💤 Stay laying down until your light turns green
💤 Keep the bedroom light off
💤 Toys are for awake time

The result? She stayed in bed and started sleeping later.

The bigger lesson here isn’t just about bedtime—it’s about clarity. Kids aren’t “not listening” when they follow rules differently than we imagined. They’re following them literally.
