I’m not sure we heal from grief.
Maybe this seems like something less than inspiring to say, but it’s not intended to be.

I’ve learned “healing” should not be the goal of grief “recovery”.

Grief isn’t something we fix.
Grief can’t be outrun.
Grief needs to be felt.
Grief needs to be processed.

Naturally, grief shatters our Soul into a million pieces; and a broken heart doesn’t heal like a broken bone does.

How can it?

Bones can be x-rayed. Heartbreak can’t.

And, really x-rays aren’t required in grief. Grief is the normal response to the death of a person we love.

Breaking is part of grief - it’s expected. But, staying broken isn’t.

Grief is born from love.
And, we do not need to “heal” from love.

Healing from grief isn’t the end game.

We learn to live with grief.

We learn how to rebuild our lives around our grief. But, we don’t ever eliminate it. We don’t do this because it becomes part of our psyche.

Eventually, grief and life coexist together. With time, you “can tell your story and it doesn’t makes you cry”, but I’m not sure this is because you are “healed”. I think it’s because grief gets different. Its intensity changes so that we can continue to live with a type of heartbreak that lives quietly in our bones.

If you met me today, you’d not notice that I’m grieving. Nearly eight years later I do not wear my grief as openly as I once did. It’s not immediately visible anymore, but it’s still there. And, I’m okay with this because my grief is really just my love.
