Frida: A Synthesis of Narrative and Technical Design

In my practice as a Fashion Design Lecturer and Researcher, I advocate for conceptual aesthetics with production readiness. My collection, FRIDA, applies this by translating Frida Kahlo’s medical history into a technical exploration of “garment as armour.”

Structural Integrity and Technical Precision
The design process began with a rigorous audit of support structures. Using precise technical drawings, I mapped out paneling that mimics orthopedic bracing while maintaining an editorial finish. The technical drawings prioritize construction; for example, structured bodices utilize advanced dart manipulation and internal boning to ensure garments function as sculptural objects (Fletcher and Grose, 2012). From a Quality Control perspective, every seam was evaluated for tension to ensure heavy fabrications did not compromise fit.

The visual narrative relies on a juxtaposition of rigid textiles and fluid drapes, reflecting the dichotomy between Kahlo’s physical fragility and her robust spirit.
Corsetry: Multiple panels were engineered for a contoured fit, meeting bespoke tailoring standards.
Textile Manipulation: Three-dimensional floral applications provide the tactile depth necessary for high-end editorial presentation.

As a Designer, I view these sketches as manufacturing blueprints. The placement of hardware and reinforcement of stress points ensure a seamless transition from sample room to production. This adherence to industry-compliant standards replaces “creative fluff” with production-ready intellectual property (Armstrong, 2014).

FRIDA demonstrates that high-fashion aesthetics and technical accuracy are not mutually exclusive. By filtering biographical data through a rigorous technical lens, I have created a collection that meets the highest standards of the South African clothing industry while maintaining a high-end aesthetic.
