DEAR ARTISTS!!!
Before signing up your artist management contract, you must know that:
- A standard management fee is usually around 5% - 25% of your earnings.
- Your manager takes a cut of your proceeds from album sales, any label advance, and from the earnings from deals they have negotiated.
- Some do not get your money from your merchandise sales, your songwriting royalties, or from deals they have not negotiated (unless you have a prior agreement saying otherwise).
- Keep in mind that if you are a small brand/band who hasn't started making an income yet, know that the 5% - 25% of nothing is still nothing. Stop trying to propose deals with sayin' "Push me I'll give you 50%". 50% of what?
- If you're not having any income right now, offer cover fees. An get someone who's willing to work on your business whiles you take care of expenses an the music, they manage, they get paid with split on sales. A manager should never be required to spend on your music business. Once they spend. That's an investment. And investment= ownership.
- You may want to keep this earning potential in mind when you are nailing down the details of the job expectations, some management charge by various rates of your total gross of income(e.g 5% on 50k,10% on 100k,15% on 150k,20% on 200k & 25% on 250k).
Stop thinking everyone owes you a handout. Everyone is trying to earn a living in this industry. It's business over pleasure.
Yours Truly
