October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 💖
As a community dedicated to supporting mothers through their breastfeeding journeys, it's crucial that we also focus on breast health. Breastfeeding has been shown to provide some protection against breast cancer, but it’s still important for all women, breastfeeding or not, to stay informed and proactive about their breast health.
Here are a few key reminders:
1. Know Your Normal: Whether you're breastfeeding or not, it’s important to be familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel. Changes can happen, but sudden lumps, swelling, or persistent pain should be checked by a healthcare provider.
2. Self-Exams Matter: Regular self-breast exams can help you detect any changes early. While breastfeeding can make your breasts feel different, you know your body best. Trust your instincts.
3. Breastfeeding and Cancer Risk: Breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. The longer you breastfeed, the greater the protective effect. But it's important to note that this is not a guarantee, and screenings are still essential.
4. Post-Breastfeeding Screenings: After you stop breastfeeding, it’s a good time to resume or start regular mammograms, especially if you're over 40 or have a family history of breast cancer.
5. Support Each Other: If you or someone in your community has gone through breast cancer while breastfeeding or during motherhood, your stories can provide hope and strength to others.
Let’s stay informed, support each other, and prioritise our breast health during this important month and beyond. Together, we can make a difference. 💗
